Bank Statement and Card Opened in the Post ?

AlisonGray
I am not sure if this is correct board to put this on, so if not please move it as required, but as it is to do with banking I am hoping it is in the right place.
I am basically looking for a bit of advice in what is a strange situation, and I am at a loss to know what to do.
For the past 4 years we have had the same postman, never any problems and then he got moved to a new route and we have had 6 in the last 3 months !.
About a month ago I ordered a trolley coin from EBay, the seller only put it in a standard white envelope with no bubble wrap etc and when it arrived the bottom corner of the envelope was torn off, but the trolley coin was still inside, then a week later I got my bank statement which had been opened, it was opened at the very top neatly by one of those letter opener things by the look of it, but then on Saturday my new Barclaycard arrived and again the envelope was opened neatly but the card had been removed from its sticky back that sticks it to the covering letter and was just lose in the envelope with the covering letter.
Now I don’t want to bring this up with the Royal Mail as I have no proof, and I certainly don’t want to confront the postman, but I was telling one of my friends about it today and she said that the Trolley coin probably felt like a £1 coin through the envelope, but the fact the bank card has been removed would mean that someone would also have access to the 3 digit number on the reverse as well as the card number, expiry date on the front, she said it was quite serious stuff but I don’t know if she is getting a bit carried away.
Anyway I am stuck, I don’t really want this to continue, but at the same time I don’t want to go making accusations when I have no proof, I am in the house when the post comes so no one else has access to it before I get it.
What is best to do ?.
Thanks.

Contact Royal Mail with your just as you have outlined above.
Very serious in my opinion.0 -
If it was the postman it'd be pretty daft to open something and then deliver it...
I'd suggest it's more likely that post is going to the wrong address, someone is opening it without noticing the address, then when they realise they put it through your letterbox.
Either way it can't hurt to raise this with Royal Mail, since something is happening with your mail. In any case you should definitely call Barclaycard, they will probably cancel the card and send you a new one as a precaution.0 -
Complain. It's not only your postman that is a culprit. I doubt it but could even be machines chewing your post.0

Just to add that thieving is just unacceptable to Postmen, make sure your address on letter is 100% correct including postcode as letters are machine sorted these days, this avoids the item being sorted into wrong address.I have a deep burning indifference0

Machines might sort post but they do not deliver it.0 -

Thanks for that, I never thought of it going to the wrong address, my address is correct on all the letters, and just not sure why they would remove the card from its backing if they knew it was the wrong name and address.
Phoned Barclay and spoke to someone, but although friendly and helpful I don't think he understood what I was telling him, and he just said he would put a note on my account.0 -

Hi, All the letters are 100% correct with Name, Address and Postcode, don't want to blame the postman probably just going to th wrong address for some reason.
One other thing I checked is the bank statement is not complete, I do a lot of transactions and the statement was 6 pages, pages 5 & 6 are missing as it says Page 1 of 6, Page 2 of 6 etc, the last 2 pages are not there.0 -
You need to call back Barclaycard and get the card cancelled and a new one issued.
Call the number for reporting the card lost/stolen to them, and explain that your card has been compromised as an unknown person has had access to the card and security code and you have no idea whether it was a mistake or whether they have noted the details down to go online shopping with them.
Always better safe than sorry.
Do you need to receive paper bank statements? It's up to you obviously but personally I go paperless now as I'd prefer to have as little of my personal and financial information floating around the post system as possible.
I'd report to Royal Mail too. It may not be the postie but something is going on with your post and it has now happened more than once.0 -
I would do what others have advised and cancel the card immediately.
I would also be straight on to Royal Mail and tell them what has happened.0 -
By all means cancel your current card and request a new one (as soon as poss!) - but if the new card is sent by post, wouldn't you be in the same situation? I'm probably being paranoid, but could it be collected directly from your local branch?
By the way, paperless statements are indeed far safer, as is contacting your bank online by secure message/ secure phone contact. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
