he wasn't asking about your car, he was asking marktheshark to elaborate about the mythical M3 diesel a car which doesn't exist yet but looking at the way BMW are going may be made at some time in the future

He was also asking about my car, he asked earlier in the thread. I didn't bother to answer because I didn't like the way it was asked and I didn't see the relevance.

The Alpina D3 that I mentioned is as near as you can get.

    But some day .............
  • my BMW530d did more MPG on premium diesel than non premium. I do a similar journey and I tested it for months. Many moons ago, I used to work in a BMW factory so this sort of thing interests me.

never noticed much of a MPG difference on the diesel Ford Smax but the engine wasn't as jumpy or as growly with the premium stuff in it (that's a less definitive test than MPG I know!)

both cars always seemed happier :)

what were you seeing four or five MPG more?

that is the sort of the increase that i was seeing when i was using a diesel motor running on Esso premium so for me it was 10-12% increase, Add that to other fuel saving tips like keep windows closed take out any excess weight dont run with roof rack on and keep the tyres correctly inflated it added up to a healthy increase in MPG that covered the extra cost of running premium and it was kinder to the engine due to the extra additives in the premium

I used to run a Mondeo diesel (2.0) and was doing up to 50k a year so kept a spreadsheet for fuel costs as it was more than my mortgage at the time!

I found the "normal" Shell diesel gave slightly better MPG, it worked out around 1-2 MPG better and so the extra cost was worth it, usually only a penny or two a litre more.

The "premium" diesel didn't really get me any more miles though so I never bothered with that, but in hindsight I maybe didn't try it enough if you need to give it 3 tankfulls to see the difference.

I am currently trying it on my current car to see if it improves, will report back in a few weeks, I only do 30k a year now!

so that would be the standard 330D with the M sport pack then which is a million miles from an M3

just because it has little M badges it is not an M3

Hardly detail splitting, an M3 it's most definitely not.

    :rotfl:

I wouldnt describe the difference between the M Sport trim level to an M3 as "detail splitting".
