Di I need router AND modem?

I have had a modem for years, then when Talktalk installed fibre optic, they added a router, so two items sit flashing away. Yesterday, my son-in-law commented that he only has one item. I am now thinking if it is necessary to have both?.

If your router has a built in VDSL modem then no you don't

Post a photo or model numbers of your devices.

Are you sure the TalkTAlk device isn't a modem AND a router?

I have Talktalk fibre installed by BT OpenReach.

The older Talktalk routers require a fibre modem.

Talktalk are rolling out a new router (which I believe is still in Beta) which has a built-in modem. The one I had was less effective than my old Router, so I'm still using that (but perhaps I was unlucky).

This is the older router that I have...

Is it your original modem that sits there flashing away or an Openreach modem that was installed when you got fibre. If it's your old one then it won't be connected to anything and can just be removed.

It seems that there are two possibilities with TalkTalk - an Openreach modem + Router or a combined VDSL modem + router - https://help2.talktalk.co.uk/guided-assist/how-setup-and-check-my-fibre-equipment

If it's the Openreach modem and you only have/want a single wired PC then that could be connected directly to the modem but you'd be losing out on the NAT firewall in the router as well as WiFi and additional wired PC options.

The additional power cost is going to be trivial - maybe £10 a year and even that isn't entirely wasted in winter as it will just produce some heat.

early talk talk setup included a modem supplied and fitted by BT , those were a BT install

since then they have started issuing the Huiwi (?) hg535 , which is a one piece job and can be used on both basic , and fibre setups , this is a self install unit

Your setup is identical to mine, so you do need both boxes.

Thank you to all those that replied quickly. It does seem I need both, but when we have more time, I will speak to TT and ask them to look at the system I have, then throw into the conversation that I have been with them for years, and ask if they would supply me with a single set-up. I will come back and let you know how I get on. Thanks again.
