    Salmond rebuked

Salmon, the SNP spokesperson on foreign affairs, showed an old-fashioned side of his character in the Commons when he said

"Behave yourself, woman" to Small Business Minister Anna Soubry.

He was of course defended by the SNP Shadow Minister for Funny Excuses.

Funny how the Salmond thing is all afire in the media but https://wildernessofpeace.wordpress.com/2015/06/05/uppity-jocks-cant-you-take-a-joke/ this on the same day seems to be in the main ignored, are people thinking its not acceptable to say to a woman to behave themselves but it is acceptable to say the Scots should be treated like slaves just to solve the west Lothian q ?

Oh everyone should stop being so bloody sensitive. Grow a pair (of your choosing) and deal with it.

In this case it isn't about being 'sensitive'. It's about double standards. Can't be telling people to 'laugh off' images such as the above and that they're not to be taken seriously. Then getting all riled up and outraged over a 'behave yourself wummin' comment.

Especially since the lady herself Anna Soubry, is on record as saying that Salmond isn't someone she'd like to meet in a dark alleyway ! What did she think she was inferring by that ?
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?
  • I heard Edwina Currie on Radio Scotland the other morning and she called one caller "darling" or something like that, in her most delightfully condescending manner. If I'd been the caller I'd like to think that I'd have had the presence of mind to tell her that I certainly was not her darling, in fact that I wouldn't have touched her with John Major's......:)

Seroiusly though, it seems to be the case that people are determined to go hunting for things to be offended about. The "right" to take offence has been elevated to such a status that what we used to call freedom of speech is now an illusion and is becoming increasingly undermined by those who use the notion of "offence" as a shield against having their stupid beliefs and undemocratic aspirations exposed and criticised.

What a lot of invented hysteria rushing to the defense of the erstwhile Mighty Leader. Mighty Leader, that is, to those of the SNP persuasion perhaps; to others a figure of fun?

All sorts of chips on shoulders in evidence.

    Not really.

If you don't actually want responses to posts you make on a particular subject area. Then perhaps it would be wise not to post them ?

And mabye admit that there does seem to be some degree of double standards going on within the media re sexism. Which is some cases you're only too happy to let go as 'a bit of fun' ( I notice you didn't bother with any of that )... and that which is not.. ( in order to have another bash at Alex Salmond, and the responses here ).

In all honestly, Salmond is no angel. But it's been nearly 4 solid years of Salmond bashing in the newspapers/media now. Soubry isn't guilt free in her own comments either. It's really time to turn attention to the other 55 MP's and see how they fare, as your own thread title suggests. The days when SNP = Alex Salmond are now over.

    Yes really Shakey.

Salmond is touted as being a master of the rules and etiquette of the House of Commons. Well apparently he's not that polite about it.

Doesn't she say that slavery isn't the solution to the West Lothian question?

People seem to take offence for a living these days. The picture of whatsit on the ball was less offensive than Swedes gag The Sun printed.

The 'woman' remark was condescending but no worse than that. Sexism is that almost all senior positions in modern life are held by men, not showing a picture of a politician's head photoshopped onto a pop-star or calling a woman "woman" in a condescending way.

No, being touted as a master of the rules is my personal opinion. One made after reading his biography where he's used his very astute memory of rules and 'smallprint' on several occasions and used to advantage. This personal observation seems to be one shared by political commentators who know him well.
Salmond turned himself into an authority on Erskine May, the parliamentary bible. So it was hardly surprising that the former first minister last week spotted right away the devious manner in which the Conservative Government hope to introduce English Votes for English Laws (Evel).

Like I said, I'm not debating the rights and wrongs. But there are double standards at play. Whereby some seem to be held to a somewhat higher standard than others are. We have one condescending remark in every single newspaper and media outlet touted as a sexist 'offence' and outrage.

    https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=salmond+soubry&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=4CB0Vbj3MqPR7QbE84DIBw

But it's a joke to have Nicola Sturgeon ( and I'd say the same for any female politician ) to have their face photoshopped onto a revealing bikini clad body etc etc and mocked that way. Either both are 'jests', or both are 'offensive'. But Salmond shouldn't be held to a different standard than anyone else would be.
