This is not a new practice for Tesco they have been doing it for years, it's just that they are employing the tactic far more aggressively lately and have discarded the subtleties, like gradually reducing the facings of branded products to equal those of their own and replaced it with both decreasing branded facings whilst increasing own label facings. So whereas at one time you would get say 4 facings of mc v's jaffa cakes and one or two of tesco own brand gradually change to two of each, now you will see the difference overnight 4mc'vs one day and one own brand, next day 4 own brand and no mc'vs in sight, this is why more people are becoming aware, Tesco just don't feel the need to wean you off the market leaders anymore, more a case of if you don't like it hard luck
There's a little bit more to it than that, Ben. Where manufacturers normally have to pay for facings, Tesco is now asking manufacturers for an extra premium on top of what they would normally pay for the facings. An example of this is Goodfellas. Next time you're in Tesco, check out how many facings (and range) of Solos you see. It's drastically decreased in recent months due to Tesco demanding extra money from Northern Foods. Rather than pay up, Northern Foods reduced the range down in all Tesco stores. You can only get the basic range of Solos in Tesco now.
I can't remember which supermarket chain it was, but the same thing happened with Utterly Butterly. The company was asked to pay an extra premium, which they refused to do. After arguing about it, Utterly Butterly pulled its products off the shelves of this particular supermarket. It's been sorted now, though. Manufacturers do indeed have to pay to have their products ranged. Not only do they have to pay for that, they also pay for position on the shelf, and number of facings. If they want a promotion end, they have to pay extra. All promotions are funding by the manufacturer, not the supermarket chain. In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

Withabix, I understand what you are saying, but what we want is CHOICE! If I want to buy Cravendale or Buxton I want the option, I certainly don't want to give Tesco any more power than they already have, this taking away our choice is insidious, it's like the government making us into a nanny state where our every move is monitored, and Tesco appear to be moving along the same lines.
If in the future every product you buy is an "own brand" would you still feel this is ok? Imagine if virtually all the food in the UK was under a Tesco label, or whatever supermarket you use. Democracy is all about choice!
Lil-me, I have checked with Asda and at this point they don't deliver where we are yet. Hopefully they will in the future.
I like the choice I have to buy the cheapest acceptable (to me) version of any product I require - some of you obviously have too much cash if you want to waste it on brand names!!!!!!! Or even in better supermarkets!
I do main shopping in Tesco, secondary in Morrison and occasional in both Lidl and my local shops.0 -
I wish Sainsburys would deliver to me. The shop is less than 10 miles away, they deliver to the villages either side of me. I feel really left out and I am fed up with Tesco and our only other option for delivery is Ocado.Ellie

Have to disagree with Withabix on the milk is milk debate, because if you drink alot of milk on its own, as with bottled water you can taste quite a significant difference even if you blind taste it.
As for not selling cravendale I asked at our local tesco express why they were'nt selling it and was told it is only sold in certain stores according to how afflunent the area is considered to be!! I found this most bizarre but it does seem to ring true in the stores in the posher end of town it is stocked and in the poorer end stores its not stocked.
I think this freedom of choice affluent/non affluent thing is c**p, im sure different types of shoppers go into all of their stores, some of this stuff is looking like harking back to communist times in the baltics, when people could only buy what they were told!0 -

Harz, if you do your main shop at Tesco, then you must positively ENJOY throwing money away! Tesco own brand prices are frequently higher than the market leading product bought from another supermarket.
Tesco have done little for the consumers of this country, but they deserve a gold medal for their success in brainwashing customers into believing that what they sell is (a) cheaper, (b) good quality, and (c) good value.
...... and don't get me started on my favourite rant - Tesco BOGOF's, where they frequently double the price of an item, and then offer BOGOF. Even on BOGOF, their stuff can be expensive! Take the latest Typhoo offer. Something like £2.38 for 160 bags, but on BOGOF so actually only £1.19 per pack. This same pack is selling in Lidl for about 99p. The offer's saving grace is that the Tesco packs have £1 coupons printed on them, but without these, customers would be throwing money away.
Grrrrr ..... Tesco ....... con merchants!0 -

You obviously hate Tesco, I don't, neither do I love them. I buy based on known quality, my tastes, and unit cost taking into account any offers, coupons etc. in any of my three available supermarkets according to what product I actually want. My next choice of retailer (Asda) is over 30 miles away and therefore not a viable proposition. And, yes I do bulk buy when offers and use by dates are suitable. You should remember that not everybody lives in an area with easy access to several retailers.0 -

Ahh, now you've mentioned coupons, I can see the point in shopping at Tesco. It's not something I've really tried, but I see from these forums that couponning at Tesco can save a serious proportion of the bill.
..... and why lecture me about remembering that "not everybody lives in an area with easy access to several retailers" since you yourself mentioned shopping at Tesco, Morrison's and Lidl? I therefore assume that you, as you put it, live in an area with easy access to several retailers. However, I suppose the description "easy" is subjective, and your opinion might well differ from mine.0
