Well it could be done automatically, and I don't think it is unreasonable for people to make this assumption on first thoughts.

Of course if you spend a bit longer then it doesn't make any sense.

I think the suggestion is hilarious. What's stopping you spending it then saying it blew away?

I was thinking the other day about the following scenario. Suppose you lost a twenty pound note out of your wallet, for example the wind blew it away. Could that twenty pound note be traced back to the atm or bank where it was initially withdrawn from along with the account number, date, time etc of the withdrawal using the serial number as a tracker ?

Why don't you do some research for yourself? Go and lose £20 in the wind then find out what your bank says.

P.S. can you let me know where you will be when you lose the £20 in the wind?

I can imagine a few years down the line, and we may well be talking about this kind of thing as a way of detecting and preventing money laundering and other cash-based crimes.

Tracking serial numbers would begin to make cash as traceable as non-cash bank transactions.

I imagine we stop using cash altogether, at least for biggish transactions.
So, there would be no anything to track.
