flight delay compensation.

Options
I recently flew back from Rome with British Airways. Firstly I paid extra to change my flight (brought forward by 6 hours) due to a family event and paid an additional £182-00. The day before the flight I got a text from BA telling me my flight had been cancelled due to a fire at Rome airport. My flight was re-scheduled for 2 hours later. That flight was also delayed by an hour making us delayed by THE 3 hours.
I have contacted BA who have said it was a fault with the Plane although we were told different, both by text and by customer services when I phoned to confirm the reason for the delay.. Even when we arrived at Rome airport we could smell the remnants of the fire. BA are denying the fire and have basically said "tough".
Any ideas where I can go next with this?
thanks.
