Should I pay for a shoddy haircut?

    It's her job to cut hair, and part of that responsibility is knowing the risks regarding cutting someones hair wrong. It might be that she was being lazy or arrogant, she could be very poorly trained, or she might have just had a totally honest mistake. But all of them are part and parcel of her job, and you should not be expected to mitigate her risks by still putting money in her pocket.

    If I went to a restaurant and they burnt my food and I left without eating, would anyone on here seriously expect to pay for the meal still?

    If you ordered a jumper online, and they sent a t-shirt instead, would you still pay for it including delivery as they said you can still wear it and it was an honest mistake?

    I know that this is a very diplomatic and understanding viewpoint, which is commendable. However I feel you need to impose your decision on the hairdresser. Like all services that you pay for - you shouldn't be rewarding mistakes by paying for them anyway.

    This sounds civilized, but I think this hairdresser will see this approach as antagonistic, and will start a heated argument.

    If they were happy to let you walk out without paying then that should be the end of it!

    Just tell everyone else not to go there.

    It was yesterday - if she didn't chase you down the street and they haven't been in touch, just leave it. If they contact you regarding payment, speak to the manager, stay civil and explain why you didn't pay.

    The only time I have had a disastrous haircut (and colour) I did pay as I didn't know what to do (quite shy) but the next day I called and spoke to the manager and explained exactly why I was unhappy. She didn't say "you should have said something yesterday" as I expected, and instead offered me a free colour and a tidy up with someone else. I have said this to other hairdressers I've had and all have said "You shouldn't have paid!" but in a way I'm glad I did as I got it remedied for free, rather than paying elsewhere.

    I wouldn't pay.

    If you go back and pay now, they will think you have changed your mind and you like the way your hair is, and are happy with what she's done. Quite possibly, someone could change their mind about a cut after a day or so, especially if their friends said it was ok. If they think you overreacted, you're paying up will confirm this.

    I wonder whether you'll soon receive a whole host of PMs from ambulance-chasing no-win, no-fee lawyers whose mantra is "where there's blame, there's a claim"?

    The person posting is a customer wanting a decent haircut, not a therapist looking to sort out the stylist's problems.

    No, you don't have to pay, and chances are you won't want to go back there anyway. Just wear a hat for a bit and keep the money for a decent haircut. Or go extra-short - very convenient!

    You have to be Mr. Nice Guy ! What a softy - you react , and reasonably , but then feel bad about what you did and want it all to have been OK .

    We have all been there at one time or another... Let it be ! What quite would you like to happen as a result of going back in ? It's not worth it - just walk on , don't look back .

    I had a really bad haircut on a Groupon deal so had already paid. It was awful and I e-mailed the salon who immediately offered my next hair cut free of charge with the owner of the salon. Every hairdresser I've ever been to cuts off more than you ask but this was the first time I felt it was bad enough to complain.


    Having stormed out I don't see much to gain from you going back, I assume they have your phone number so would be in touch if they wanted to follow up.
