UK Airports - HM Revenue & Customs

I read this on another forum...

"A friend of ours was bring back more cigarettes than he should. When he reached Glasgow Airport a message came over the pubic address system warning that all luggage and hand luggage would be checked to make sure no one was over the cigarette limit. However, there was an honesty basket at Customs to place all cigarettes that were over the limit. My friend told me that cigarettes where appearing from everywhere and being placed in the huge basket, it filled up fast."

...never come across a PA broadcast like that before.

The friend was returning from Tenerife (mentioned later in the thread on that forum).

But wouldn't a PA broadcast 'capture' anyone within earshot, whether they're arriving from EU or on-EU, and not just pax who've just got off a particular flight?

Just seems an odd sort of PA broadcast.

Was there any mention of whether bags were actually checked by customs? Or just a scare tactic..?

Slightly OT, but are the Canary islands considered differently to the rest of the EU by HMRC?

I only ask because there is a sign at London City Airport listing all the countries from which you can use the blue channel, and it says "Spain (excluding Canary Islands)".

I haven't seen such a sign/exclusion at any other UK airports I use, and as a result have always used the blue channel when returning to the UK from the Canaries (have never arrived from Canaries to LCY). Not that I have ever returned from there with anything to declare anyway.

Possibly acting on intelligence suggesting that there was an excess of over-allowance passengers expected I suppose. Mind you if the OP is correct & the "honesty basket" filled up quick then I'd say that intelligence may have been spot on, even if it wasn't the people they'd been aiming for.

Either that or Dave in customs had run out of fags and having just got that new car last week can't afford to buy them :D
