Squirrels in neighbour's attic (terraced house)

We live in a mid-terrace and I can see a steady stream of squirrels running up and down the back of the house, getting in under the roof at the point between our gutter and next door's. I am 99% sure they are going into the neighbour's side as I've checked in our attic and I can't see or hear anything from them when I know they are in there. I can't get very close to the edge but I can't see any light from outside and I can't see anything through from the neighbour's attic. I can't hear anything from them in the room underneath where they would be if they were coming into our attic either.
I have told next door that the squirrels are getting in and advised them to sort it asap. My parents had them in their attic and they caused a lot of damage. I mentioned the possibility of chewing through pipes and cables, but the owner didn't seem too concerned. Their attic is converted into bedrooms so I think they will find it difficult to get to the edge of the roof from inside the house.
As their attic is converted, I think our attics are properly separated. Other than keeping an eye on it and encouraging the neighbour to sort it, is there anything else I should be doing? Obviously I'd rather they stayed in the neighbour's house, but I would rather they weren't there at all as I know they can be a fire risk and my children's bedroom is closest to where the squirrels are entering. I'm aware that I can't force the neighbour to sort it, nor can I barge into the house and do something about it myself! I can't even go up from the outside to have a look/block the hole as we have no access to our garden from the front and you can't get a long ladder through the house (the roofer we used last year went over the front, but I'm not brave enough for that!).
I would really appreciate anybody's thoughts on how to keep the squirrels out and perhaps suggestions for the neighbour when I next see him.
