Yes - I agree house prices are cheap in the areas where there is no work.

I have a young guy working in my team - had to leave Lancashire and come to London because he couldn't get work in the area he wanted to work in. Not uncommon I would suggest.

I make the point again - average house prices (presumably a typical average house) are ten times median salaries. So I might suggest that prices out a lot of people from buying the supposed 4 detached house they apparently want immediately. So they are probably looking at stretching themselves to buy a flat - in the areas where there is work - and that requires potentially their maximum earning power in their 30s so there is not much chance of a move up the supposed ladder.

Or alternatively maybe I have missed those banks wanting to offer 8 times salary mortgages to all these supposedly lazy youngsters!

So try not to dump on our kids, grandkids, nephews and nieces - no final salary pensions, massive graduate debt, huge national debt we created to pay off, zero hours contracts, low wages. Yes - they are all just lazy aren't they!

No work Sheffield or Leeds or Manchester or Newcastle or Edinburgh or Glagow or Liverpool ?

    No cheap housing ?

Don't be a lefty who encourages defeatism among the young. Inequality is a bad thing in extremes because it creates unproductive jealousy and erodes democracy but don't encourage the idea that there are no opportunities in this country, there are loads.

We are actually really lucky and there are more than enough life chances to be had up north in 2015.
Proudly voted remain. A global union of countries is the only way to commit global capital to the rule of law.

Someone my husband knows at his work commutes in from the North to get to work in London as he couldn't afford to buy anything decent and he would rather make the sacrifice and have a nice, big house up there. He must have a ridiculous amount of commuting time! Their jobs are fairly well paid though and the man gets help with travel costs so the effort is worth it. Most people working in London couldn't do that type of thing as the travel costs would make it unaffordable.

I worked with someone in the early 90's who was named commuter of the year. However, specific details of his commute were mentioned in a newspaper article which our employer realised meant that he was fiddling his hours (working on contract).

He was given the Spanish archer rather quickly.
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

To be honest that probably does go on as the management is very hands off and lax where he works. I worked with a manager who would fiddle her travel expenses a few years ago. When we went on courses she would say she drove into work and then drove to the course and claim money for petrol when she would just go straight there from home.

Prescott talked of moving government departments up north years ago. The bbc is the only one I can think of and that cost a fortune.

Thet can relocate them to other parts of London

it still puzzles me why London was sey up with a square mile called 'the city' where there is half a million jobs and the need for those people to all stamped in at 9 amd out at 5.

There are 33 boroughs they should all (or at least 5-10 of them) had big commercial districts rather than one giant one in the middle.

    We had this discussion before.

I suggested moving MPs to Lyneham (can't remember which).
Wiltshire is a really nice place with direct trains to London and a few miles of the M4. Lovely countryside - white horses, stone circles, crop circles.

Some people were absolutely up in arms about expecting MPs to live in the same housing as soldiers.

The issue is that people, whilst not short of ideas for shifting other people out of London, tend to have a million and one excuses why they themselves absolutely have to stay.

You've sold Wiltshire - nice place, direct trains, close to the M4, stones circles etc. etc. Why isn't everyone there? Answer - it ain't London.

Some of those reasons are perfectly valid.
    e.g. my mother is dying.

The jobs in quality and quantity aren't there.
I am not saying that there are no job vacancies, but I am saying there aren't enough for millions of people (or even 5 figures) to move up North to make any significant different to London.

My suggestion was to move the jobs and THEN I feel it's reasonable to suggest the people in those jobs move as well
and YES I would be prepared (glad in fact) to do that myself so no hypocriscy there.

I don't feel it's reasonable for people to suggest people move when there aren't the jobs for them to go to.
  • When London pops, the whole UK plc will pop. This fake zombie recovery is tied to an artificial revaluation of property assets. Wait until those who've bought at the top of the bubble will default on their mortgages. It will be a carnage.

What event will cause them to default on their mortgages? interest rates are staying low for a while and unemployment is going down.
When do you think this will happen?
