Can we afford 2 cars or is he being mean?

Money better spent on an older E39 BMW. Solid, reliable cars that are a joy to drive0

Well don't you ask your best friend 'BeenThroughItAll' on whether the BMW E39 is a good purchase for under £2k? I'm sure he would have owned a BMW E39 in the past, seeing that his already owned the BMW M3 in his younger days as a driving thug.
They are very, very good cars and a lot of car for the money.0 -
Hows how much you know about the BMW E39 series. The 2 litre engine used in the BMW E39 till 2001 isn't an 'eco-box' engine albeit their entry level engine. It's still a proper in-line 6 cylinder that's silky smooth with decent torque but probably not enough to make a car as heavy as the e39 feel quick.0

If the OP already has at least 1 years NCM and doesn't mind driving a saloon, the E39 automatic will suit her very well.0

Not the diesel.

Even the entry level diesel BMW E39 sold in the UK was a 2.5 litre 6 cylinder engine with good HP and torque numbers.
No, the original entry level UK diesel was a dire 115BHP 2.5 6 pot. It couldn't pull the skin off a packet of Bird's custard... Speaking of which...0 -

I believe that engine was originally designed for the older preceding E34 5 series and was made available for the E39 in the first 1 or 2 years of its life and eventually uprated.0 -

Isn't someone a little too much of a BMW fan boy?
But in all seriousness, you damn very well know BMW make excellent cars and the M cars are something special relative to that of an average car on the road today.
Of the seventy or so cars I've owned in the 23 years since I bought my first at the age of 16, only six have been BMWs. Two E39 528is, one E39 M5, one E36 M3, one E46 318ti Compact, and an E38 750il. By comparison, I've owned seven Volvos, six Skodas, one Ford, one Renault, one Vauxhall, eleven Rovers, four Subarus, five Mazdas, three Jeeps, two Range Rovers, two Caterhams, five Triumphs, a couple of Saabs, and an assortment of others.
I have never said BMWs aren't good cars.0 -

So what he said was correct then.0
