It's an affront to personal privacy if governments are hacking them and not revealing their exploitations, sure... But I wonder about corporate VPNs. How many companies have left themselves open to international espionage by using them? How big a loss could this be to the economy is ALL recorded business information was, effectively, public?

VPN's are not as safe as lots of people think. Probe the network and you can see that the VPN can quite easily have a lapse and reveal your genuine IP.

Going back a while now when broadband was rolling out i got it and testing some firewalls with friends.

Continued probing of their systems sometimes got the firewall to drop its guard, I assume they are all MUCH better than this now.

DOS attacks maybe crippling to a website but you may find that people are also monitoring the websites ports to see if it opens up vulnerabilities.

The better vpn's have Automatic kill switch which shuts down your site as soon as the VPN connection drops, so no data is revealed.

They've moved on a bit since then.
