how about SureYouCanEmailMeAReceiptButAnyJunkmailGetsChargedAt100PoundsPerItem@somewhere.combreathe in, breathe out- You're alive! Everything else is a bonus, right? RIGHT??0

I was very sceptical too, and gave them the email address I use for 'junk mail' - eg. if I am entering a free competition where I fancy the prize but where I know that entering the competition means I am going to get loads of spam as a result.
I literally only received a copy of the receipt by email, and nothing further. They explained to me that it's so that if you lose your receipt or if it fades, for example, you can still find it easily. I actually think this is a very good service, though I wish they publicised it so that I had known why they were asking me at the till. I worked in Argos years ago when I was a student and the receipts did used to fade after a year or so. Now that consumer law has changed and you can still go after the retailer after quite a few years in some cases, it makes sense to be able to electronically search and find all the purchase details so that you can make a claim.0 -
I bought a lawnmower yesterday at Argos, I didn't get asked for e-mail address0

Screwfix + toolstation do the same, quite handy0

I have a separate online only email address set up for this type of thing which I only ever look in if I'm expecting something - eg an email receipt from Argos
I originally set an extra one up when I was planning my wedding, for getting quotes on venues etc as they are terrible for bombarding you with crap.
It worked so well that I now have several - one for semi-official things like my Tesco account or local council which I do check but not that often, one for job applications which I only check if I'm actually jobhunting at the time etc etc.
I have a special one for signing up to anything which is likely to spam which I don't ever look at unless I'm expecting a particular message - I just sign into it once every 3 months or so and delete EVERYTHING without looking at it.
The only people who ever get my personal email address, which I do check daily, now are actual real people who I know personally.
It works quite well.Don’t try to keep up with the Jones’s. They are broke!0 -
Maplin go further and ask for your postcode and house number. First time round I made the mistake of giving it only to be spammed forevermore, up until I moved house.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A
"Marleyboy you are a legend!"
MarleyBoy "You are the Greatest"
Marleyboy You Are A Legend!
Marleyboy speaks sense
marleyboy (total legend)
Marleyboy - You are, indeed, a legend.0 -
If you fill in the form for a Ryman's network card it asks for an email but has a box to opt out of marketing.
I ticked it, and then started to get offers / advertising so contacted them to point out that i had asked to be opted out.
Got a reply saying "I am sorry to learn that you do not wish to receive our emails" - I am surprised they didn't look at the form and copy everything over correctly!

Apple do it too. I'd imagine they add you to a marketing list but perhaps I'm being cynical.
To be fair with Apple I'd imagine that's so they can register the product to your Apple ID for warranty tracking etc...
One of the things I love about Apple is you can call the call center, give your email address and they can usually see all products you've got under your account.
I've had Apple stuff for years and I've never gotten any spam email (apart from the very occasional iTunes store email).0 -
You can add Mountain Warehouse to the list of those who want to email you the receipt. First time I've been asked.
McArthur Glen also asked me for my postcode when I was claiming my free car park voucher - I guess I was the first to refuse judging by the face on the receptionist!0 -

Did the same to me a good few years ago. I told them 'No' and the lady said words to the effect I couldn't have it if I didn't supply the details. It was for an Amplifier, speakers, twin cd desk, smoke maker, disco ball and lights so more than a couple of bob. I said fine and began to walk out, she ran after me and I couldn't help laughing. Upshot I bought the gear but never went back to see what effect if any it had. :cool:0
