Argos - Asking for e-mail address in store

I was in Argos yesterday buying a bookshelf. I went to the counter and payed for it, the cashier then said "What's your e-mail address?". I asked why I needed to give it and she said it was for the duplicate receipt.
Am I the only one who thinks this is dodgy? It's probably just so they can spam me with offers.

Make one up.
the only place I know who sent receipts like that are Richersounds.0 -
You cannot blame them for trying.
Just tell them you do not have one.0 -
Mothercare do too.0

Doesn't sound dodgy to me at all, most likely to email you offers they have.
Just say you don't have 1 or you cant remember what it is and jobs a good un.0 -
Maybe it's to email the receipt, for you to use in case of warranty claims downstream?0

Hi...
It's legit.
I've done it a few times and received a emaile receipt and never any spam.
They are probably going to start getting g rid of paper receipts. I bet it also helps them with their returns process as well.0 -
If you have a Gmail address, just give them YourNormalAddress+argos@gmail.com *
That way the email still gets throuigh to your normal account, but you can see where it came from. So if you started getting lots of SPAM then you'd know it was Argos who had done it.
* Some systems won't accept email addresses with the + symbol in it.0 -
I was asked for mine last week, I just said I would rather not give it to them.0

It is optional.
I gave mine a couple of months ago, they emailed me receipt, and I have received no junk emails from them.
I find it quite handy having an e - receipt.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Apple do it too. I'd imagine they add you to a marketing list but perhaps I'm being cynical.0
