Cape Verde holiday tips

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at places for a holiday this year and wanted to know what you all thought of Cape Verde? Has anyone been? Any must-dos while I'm out there?

Thanks! :)

Long flight, can be very windy, RIU hotels seem to dominate, not a great mix of holidaymakers.

My opinion is it is a perfect destination around Feb/March to get some warmth (ie. quite a few degrees above Canary Islands) without a long flight, jet lag and much cheaper prices than the Caribbeans.

Great for a relaxing holiday, around the pool, enjoying fantastic beautiful white beaches and blue lagoon sea. I was impressed with the quality of services at the RIU. Do not go for entertainement and exploration.

Fantastic place for surfers though and heard it kind be quite fun to hop from one Island to another, but then it starts to get quite expensive.

We were warned against it due to the likelihood of a lot of windy days.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have spoken to a few people who have been, as I was interested in Cape Verde as a possible winter holiday destination. However, none said they would return, so I have crossed it off my list.

I've always fancied Cape Verde, but was a bit worried that there wasn't much to do there. The prices seem high as well, but if the price was right I'd definitely go. The wind wouldn't bother me as it cools you down a bit, & I've stayed in 3 Rius & I wouldn't hesitate to stay in a Riu again. I'd love to be taken on a tour all round the island. We did that in Madeira (it was windy there), & absolutely loved it. If you decide to go let us know how you get on :D

rich what do you mean by long flight? I thought it was only 5-51/2 hours? Also not a great mix of holidaymakers? Pie & chips & let's get p****ed every night brigade?

If you go on holiday purely for the weather, I suppose it makes a decent mid-winter destination.
As someone that can't manage more than 10 minutes on a sun bed, I struggled to find enough things to go and see or do when I checked it out a couple of years ago.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
  • Thanks everyone! Some good stuff here :) I do hate the wind but I can deal with it!
