recent dell laptop ... with aol broadband .. and i use a modem and all is fine .
I know there was a small light always on .. that said "wi-fi".
But occassionally when i've been away in hotels with "wi-fi" .. just turned the laptop and its' fired up straight onto the internet ...no problems .
Now i've got a new toshiba satellite .. how can i tell if it's got whatever is necessary for it to work wireless when i'm away ?
hope i make sense !!

Most likely it does have wireless if newly purchased. If you press the Fn and F8 keys together does the wifi logo light up at all. If not F8 then look for the function key with the aerial symbol. Also there may be a slider switch on the side of the laptop.0

fn & f8 doesn't appear to do anything ?
f8 key appears to have an aerial symbol but pressing it on its' own doesn't seem to do anything .
can't see any slider switch .0 -
Which exact model tosh satellite is it? Do you have a wireless router you can test it with?0
-
looked at the box ..
says
tosh satellite A100-998
PSAA9E-OPPO44EN
does say
wireless lan (802 . 11 A/G )
no.. don't have wireless router.
machine bought 6 months ago.
i'm guessing that it will be ok wireless ?0 -
It will be wireless yes but so was my Toshiba, it just took me weeks to work out the reason I couldn't pick up any wireless networks was there was a button on the front you needed to press
My old Toshiba Satallite had a round silver button on the front, when my family got one a year later, it was a switch with a small orange LCD, still on the front, so try finding the button (or reading the manual and finding out how to turn it on) before going away0 -
Wow the box gave it all away.0

littlejohn .. suspect a bit of unnecessary sarcasm ....
if you're referring to .... "wireless lan (802 . 11 A/G ) "..
i haven't got a clue what that means or says .... doesn't say to me whether when i turn the laptop on in a hotel in france next week .. whether i'll be instantly connected to aol ....
.... as did happen last week when using my old dell abroad .. but that machine did have a "wifi on" light that was permanently on.
not a techie expert hence why i came on here asking for help.
Espresso ... not sure how that's suppossed to help me.0 -

I think the reason some posters were a bit frustrated is that you basically answered your own question. You essentially asked if your laptop has "wireless" and then you pointed out yourself that it even says "wireless" on the box.
The discrepency/confusion on this thread I think arises in that some of the replies assumed you'd know that wireless meant wireless when in fact you didn't know whether this applies abroad or not. So I'll make it clear that the wireless standards for "wifi" are international. Wireless here means the same thing in France."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I would be very concerned about the security implications of doing this!
