Delay compensation - Is this extraordinary circumstance?

Hi
I posted this in someone else's thread earlier but have just worked out how to post my own.
Just wondering if anyone can offer help on if we are entitled to compensation for our delay as it's a strange situation and I can't find an answer to it.
We were recently on a flight which was from Helsinki to London but got delayed before boarding by 4 hours. (3 hours 50 minutes late on arrival to London)
When I asked the reason for the delay I was told it was due to the fact the airplane we were to be flying on was coming from London but before that it had been in Rome and 2 days before there had been a fire at Rome airport which caused delays.!
First the people in London were delayed and lastly us when the plane arrived for its final pick up of the day.
I would know where I stand if the airport fire was at my departure or arrival airport but how relevant is it to my compensation rights for them to use a irrelevant airport to us as an excuse and a fire which happened over 24 hours before? It all just seems a bit of a stretched excuse.
Appreciate any help you may offer!
