With all the bank reclaiming and such, it got me thinking about my internet.
Ive been paying for 8mb for a year, but i only recieve 1.8mb so ive had the top package for no reason. Any chance of claiming back the usage ive payed for and not used.
Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but anything is worth a shot these days

lol, no chance at all (are people getting that desperate haha!)
Read the small print & they offer a service up to 8mb. So you're paying for a service dependant on the speed that your telephone line is capable of holding.0 -
Broadband claims mislead on speedThere is a huge gap between advertised broadband speeds and the actual speeds users can achieve, new research from consumer group Which? has shown.
A survey by the organisation found that broadband packages promising speeds of up to 8Mbps (megabits per second) actually achieved far less.
Tests of 300 customers' net connections revealed that the average download speed they were getting was 2.7Mbps.
As a result, Which? has called on regulator Ofcom and Trading Standards to launch a fresh investigation into UK broadband.0 -
I suppose this is maybe a mix of occasional bad marketing and over-optimistic expectations.
But as normanmark says, the ISPs are usually very specific in stating *up to 8 Mb*
ADSL Max is *rate adaptive*, meaning you get the maximum ADSL bandwidth that your phoneline can support.
Poor quality *noisy* lines will result in lower speeds!
(not to mention contention and throttling from some ISPs)
this link explains some of the jargon nicely

We just had the same thing happen with Virgin Media and ended up taking them to court
4 months in and we ended up having to take them to court - we've just won and been refunded the call costs plus money they overhcarged us. In total our calls to them topped £127 - easy to do at 50p a minute for support.
They were fairly cheap which is why we went with them, but never again will we go near them and we regret very much havnig to do so.0
