Advise needed re: letter recieved today

I came home today to find a letter from GE Money. Odd, as I've never dealt with them. It stated that I owed them arrears from an account of £66 and to pay up.
I rang, obvioulsy a bit concerned to be told that it was for a kitchen that I bought nearly 5 years ago.
At the time, I took out an interest free pay monthly option on the kitchen, as with a new mortgage and many other things to pay for I didn't have the funds up front. I paid like that for around 2 and a half years, until I came into some money which allowed me to pay it off out right.
Now today, I've been told that First National the company that I originally had a dd set up with have passed over the account as I owe £300+ still on the kitchen, despite paying it off well over 2 years ago! I queried this and was told that the settlement figure was wrong, and that I had been £300 short. When I asked why its taken over two years to get in touch they told me that my account was "in credit" whatever that means, and that as I have't bought any new Kitchen Direct products they want their money. I've asked for everything in wriiting to be sent.
I've looked, and no longer have any paperwork re: the kitchen, so really don't know where I stand with this or what I should do. I certianly can't afford to pay £60 a month for something that I felt was already paid off.
Advise, anyone?

You should never call somebody else a nerd or geek because everybody (even YOU !!!) is an"anorak" about something whether it's trains, computers, football, shoes or celebs

Presumably GE Money have bought a supposed debt from First National.
They appear to be very confused.
They say that you owe them money and that they haven’t chased you because your account is in credit. That does not make sense. If there is a credit balance that should have been offset against the debt.
They also say that the settlement figure was incorrect. If they provided the settlement figure then it is their fault that it was incorrect and two years is a little bit long to leave it before contacting you.
I don’t really know where you stand legally, as I think the law allows up to six years to pursue such matters.
However, my advice is that you write to them stating that, as far as your are concerned the debt was settled over two years ago and that you do not believe that you owe them any more and too much time has passed for you to make proper checks. If any money is owed, they should write it off as you have no intention of paying any more so long after paying what you believed was the final settlement figure.
State that you will vigorously defend that position, in court if necessary.
I think that will shut them up. If not, post again with their response.
Maybe someone else with more knowledge and experience of these matters will suggest something different.0 -
