Probably more representative than a small town, although my experience of rescues includes Shropshire and the IOW - neither of which are thriving cities!

Given your inside knowledge, why on earth didn't you tell these people that you've met?

What-the little dog you love isn't what you think it is?!! You havent kindly deposited a large sum to help an abused animal-you are a mug who's just got ripped off and is perpetuating puppy farms?
How cruel do you think I am- what would it achieve apart from making them hate me!! They probably wouldn't want to be told that now.its too late.

    It's not inside knowledge.
Because getting a dog for me was a huge undertaking I took my time.
I joined so called forums for particular types of dogs. I found myself being messaged by kindly people who had just the dog I wanted !! Joy!! They even exhibited at Crufts so they said- so they must be trustworthy (?)!

Then I looked as their Facebook pages quite a lot deeper-hmm - lets just say they are into horse and buggy racing..

Then I looked quite a lot at gumtree and pets for homes

Lots of them seemed to have poorly bred dogs
Or claimed to be rescuing Romanian muts pay £400 to help a poor Romanian dog)

The longer I looked the more I realised its a total, pit of snakes Admittedly, I could have easily made that mistake myself. I guess I was just lucky.

Yes, there are a lot of staffies in rescue as they are easily got and then got rid of.

But there also other breeds and crossbreeds.

And of course there are the dedicated breed rescues.

There are a lot of staffies in rescues for various reasons. They're still sought after as loving family pets but they've also become a status symbol for muppets due to their compact stocky build - they cost less to feed than the likes of a rottweiler and are better for smaller homes/spaces. They've also became popular as in bait fighting due to their high tolerance for pain - meaning they take more damage before dying of horrific injuries.

It is common place for a rescue to have mainly staffies (or staffie crosses) because they have been over-bred by backyard breeders. But what a lot of people dont realise is that despite rescues being full of staffies, dozens of staffies are PTS every single day. Some places dont even try to rehome them because of the sheer numbers of staffies there are. They get 7 days and if theyre not claimed/sent off to be rehomed then they are PTS.

Could it be that some rescues don't have loads of staffies because they're being PTS rather than trying to rehome them?

I've personally fostered for three of them and have done home checks/transport runs for some of the others. At least half of the list I know are reputable from dealings with them, the rest I believe to be reputable for their work with the rescues I have had dealings with

And FWIW, every rescue I've had dealings with usually have a clause saying that due to the circumstances that most dogs come to them under (strays/dumped), they cannot guarantee the behaviour/temperament.

The ones I volunteer for prefer to have the dogs in foster homes for this very reason. It gives them a better idea of what the dog is actually like in a home environment. They provide assistance even after the adoption has taken place if you're having any trouble etc and also have links with a canine behaviour professional should any dogs have severe problems.

And thats really the crux of it. With hard work and determination, you can overcome pretty much any issue a dog has.

Well at least one is reputable, I have worked for them for 30+ years.

OP I'm very sorry your child has been hurt and very sorry that the rescue were short-sighted enough not to refund any donation you gave. The money is a drop in the ocean towards the costs the dog would have incurred, and the bad publicity would cost them even more.

Hi, wondered if anyone has had any problems with any animal charities?

I.e paying a donation for an animal, based on what it says about it and then get it home and find out the write up was not true. Although the charity has made verbal assurances that it fits what the advert says.

    for e.g

buying a dog, advertised as 'good with children' 'daft as a brush' 'wouldn't hurt a fly'. You take it home, and it bites your 12 year old son. (He ends up in A&E and needs stitches on his cheek).

When you take it back to the rescue (as per their policies) they refuse to refund your 'donation' (saying it was not a fee for the dog, but rather a donation towards food, kenneling etc for other dogs) , and tell you "you chose the dog", and it's "buyer beware". They then try their utmost to make you feel like an incompetent parent and incompetent pet owner, by saying you didn't give it time to settle in!

Any advice? Has anyone had similar?

    Tia

We had a bit of a problem with a cat we got. It was rather big and was stripey and growled a lot but we were reassured it was very friendly. The cage we used to take it home was rather large and within two seconds of releasing it at home it attacked our three pit bull terriers and ate them. We asked for a refund once I managed to prise my wife out from its jaws but got no joy. Apparently its the 'donation' and not the selling price which determines the refund/return policy. Never again.

Like everything else you do your research.

There are irresponsible rescues just as there are dodgy car dealers or any other dealers.

There is nothing to prevent anyone calling themselves 'a rescue'.

There are people who are prepared to scam others and there are people who are gulllable enough to fall for the scams.

    Buyer beware.
