It's not a matter of being 'offended on behalf of others;' it's about being disgusted by someone using a derogatory term that died out years ago, and is now classed as very offensive; and in addition to that, this someone uses that term and thinks it's OK, and mocks anyone who is offended by it.
And how do you know I am not mixed race?
I wasn't responding to you actually, I was giving my opinion on something!!!!Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -
Give the dolls a weird facial expression or put their heads on back to front or upside down.
We had a doll with a back to front head, she had been through "surgery" after being accidentally decapitated whilst attempting to learn to fly down the stairs. It was a good lesson for the kids to learn what happens if you play on the stairs or attempt flying without a parachute. She was renamed Miss X after a teacher who kept telling the class that she would spot bad behaviour because "she had eyes at the back of her head".I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Shocked at this post! Are you for real? You are seriously using this term, and trying to convince everyone that it's OK? OMG!
<blah blah blah, snipped for brevity>
Ha ha, you're sore about me taking the mick out of you yesterday on the greeting cards thread, so you rummaged through my old posts, dug up a ten-day-old thread and hopped on the 'offended' bandwagon just to have a go back.
You must have a lot of time on your hands, is all I can say.. :rotfl:0 -

I don't use the term myself but the lady who sits at the desk next to me does - about herself.0 -
I too have a problem with people being offended on behalf of other people, I really don't understand it at all.
If you want an explanation - here goes. It is part of being an ally. Take for an example a white looking person in a queue at a supermarket till. In front of this person is a black person. The black person tries to pay with a cheque (this is a video on youtube in America, I don't know how old, or if cheques are used more in America than they are here, I'm quite possibly remembering the details wronglyand it isn't a cheque. Anyway .. ) and is challenged, has to provide all sorts of ID for this payment method to be accepted. Then the white looking person tries to pay the same way and has the payment accepted without the extra ID requirements.
This is an obvious example of racism and white privilege. If the white person challenges the injustice they are an ally and are supporting the victim of the racism.
Being offended on behalf of others is exactly the same principle. Leaving it to the victims of offensive behaviour / words / actions to speak out is passive collusion with the offensive behaviour. Speaking up in opposition to the wrong gives support to the target of the wrong doing.

As was correctly stated, half caste used to be the correct and acceptable term for someone of mixed race, just as coloureds was considered polite until the mid 70s.
I wouldn't use either of them now but it's certainly foolish to get annoyed about the fact that they were normal usage in their day.0 -

One of my pupils, mixed-race, described her baby as 'quarter cast'.

Perhaps if anyone is reading this thread who happens to be mixed race they could let us know their opinion on the matter?
How would you describe yourself, and are there any descriptions which are offensive or unacceptable
