Hi,
I recently bought a property with a small garage which has an asbestos cement roof. I have been hearing that it will cost about 800 pound just to remove the roof prob 3k to if i want a roof too. We have spend quite alot on getting the house modernised and nothing really lef tin the kitty.
Does anyone know if there is a better more cost effective way to deal with this?
The garage has not really been looked after some some of the timber is rotting. Is this something that building insurance might cover?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

DIY it, your local council will have a local recycling center that will accept correctly bagged asbestos cement sheets (you may have to book it in).

and read guide A14

here is an example of my councils asbestos disposal policy.0 -
Insurancewill not cover it unless it has been damaged by an insured event eg fire, storm etc
One option would be to spend a weekend up there with a hammer and rip it off yourself. You can deal with the subsequent asbestos-related lung disease in due course.0 -

or you can spend a day doing it properly and bank the £800, and sail off into the sunset.
Asbestos based cement is one of the safest forms of asbestos, if handled with care it is not an issue to DIY (which is why you are allowed to, for most other forms you legally need an HSE approved contractor)0 -
We paid £400 to have our asbestos garage roof removed and taken away by an asbestos removal company.0

Why do you want to remove it?
The company I work for as many assets which have some degree of asbestos and the cement type would generally have a management plan along the lines of leave it alone
As an householder you can dispose of asbestos free via your tip which requires you to seal and double wrap for which my local council provide viscose sheeting.
If its serviceable I would leave and do other jobs that are more needed0 -
we got a builder to take off the panels and leave in our garden (he then removed and rebuilt garage. Hubby bought some damp proof membrane plastic and covered the asbestos sheets in it and took it to local tip for disposal, he had to pay £5 for each visit to the asbestos container so cost £10 or £15. Builder had quoted us around £500 for disposal.0

contrary to popular belief, asbestos cement roofing does NOT require specialist licensed (expensive) contractors to remove. It can even be removed DIY as long as you take the right precautions. Many councils will also collect it free of charge if it is bagged correctly, so DON'T spend a fortune getting a "specialist" to remove it....it shouldn't cost more than £500 (or less if you DIY)...to be hazardous, you would have to break it up, grind it into a powder and inhale it so don't worry that going within 20 metres of it will automatically give you mesothelioma- it WON'T!!! And remember- more than half the garage roofs in the UK are asbestos cement sheeting!0

The roof containing asbestos is not a danger in itself. Why do you want to disturb it? I believe it is only if asbestos is broken up the dust is hazardous. If its just in the roof it's not dangerous unless you're planning to do something to it.0

Not all local authorities accept asbestos...Our local tip does not accept, and neither does the council have any facilities.
I took off the roof myself and when I laid a new shed base....hey presto its all gone.......20 plus years as a mortgage adviser for Halifax (have now retired), and I have pretty much seen it all....:D0
