    Teach then something:

    How to mend a bike
Build something together: a birdhouse or make a wooden cutting board. Use it for gifts to keep costs down

If you have a garden: Plant some vegetables. Let them have their own little plot. See if one of your friends might have some herbs like thyme or oregano or mint they can divide and let you have for free. Seeds for radish and salad are low cost and easy to grow.

Take advantage of the different seasons:

Make your own decorations and small gifts for christmas.
Color eggs at easter, and grow cress in small home decorated containers.

In the end its about spending time together, and doing something practial together can be great fun.

You will be able to build a small birdhouse from a broken pallet, a small saw (99p from wilkinsons) a few nails and some sandpaper.

Look on the RSPB website for designs

  • Do a local car boot sale, get the children involved in collecting stock and selling on the day.

Give the dog/s a makeover. Shampoo, trim or clip, toothbrushing. My kids love this!

If they want cash for something, help them find old still decent clothes or items and help them sell them on eBay.

Find out the history of a local spot. The more gruesome the better, smugglers hangings witches and skulduggery were particularly popular with mine when they were little. Go for a walk around the area telling the story and "expanding" on it where necessary! Turns a dog walk into an adventure.

Look out for free events put on in local museums and libraries. Been to some amazing recycling textiles workshops and storytelling events for free.

Volunteer for a local food bank. They often run fundraisers and bag packing days in the supermarket which kids thoroughly enjoy. Other charities do cleanup projects, wildlife projects etc and will give your kids and you a great time for free as they need the armpower.

A baking day - cakes - scones - pizza what's ever ingredients you have in that you can put to use.

Board games - my two love a board game afternoon with indoor picnic nibbles!

Colouring in - either make something or print off pictures from Disney website or kids TV sites.

Toy sort out great way to deal clutter toys & the kids end up playing with forgotten toy's for ages.

Make a fort dining chairs, sheets, blankets and duvets is a great indoor activity.

Cardboard shapes - if you have any old boxes, cut out shapes and let the kids colour and paint & decorate them.

Most of mine are indoor ideas as it's hard for us to get out but you can have lpads of fun in an afternoon.
