However, a couple of years in she did get an increase because she was offered another job.

Think you've come up with your own solution, I know what I would be doing if I was you and looking to negotiate a pay rise / promotion, you'd soon find out if your manager was just talking the talk, or if they really mean what they said.
  • Will be difficult to negotiate a pay rise as the department recently kicked off redundancies. But I agree, it's either that or potentially move on. I do also have the option to ask them to fund a training course for a new technology a few of us have just started using - which would effectively amount to a pay rise by preventing me having to fork out for it. But again, there may be restrictions on funding for training because of the redundancies.

There have been many posts on here on the topic of people getting paid more but doing less work than the poster, colleagues who don't pull their weight and get away with a lot: it seems to be endemic in big companies and an occupational hazard of being an employee.

These employees are called BEs - Bulletproof Employees. No matter what they do or how bad they perform or behave, they either get away with it or in some cases I've seen, get a pay increase/promotion.

A colleague on my team is exactly that, always late, if he has to do too much he gets stressed and either takes time off for stress or goes outside continualy smoking leaving me and the other team member to pick his work up.

He is paid a considerably lot more than I am.

I'm beginning to believe he could sacrifice a goat whilst eating a live baby at his desk, and our manager would just say "well it's just his way"!

In all companies these people exist and to be honest, you are best to concentrate on you're own career than to worry about other people, it'll drive you nuts otherwise.

I had this happen to me. I told the management pay me the same or I leave, they wouldn't so I left. That set off down a path in life that led me to meet my now husband and run my own business making 5-6 times what I was earning in that job.

There are other options out there for you, maybe it's time you found somewhere that appreciates you more.

I used to believe that if you gave such people enough rope they would hang themselves, but this is not always the case. How DO they get away with it? It has to be hypnotism or black magic or similar.

Companies will pay you what they can get away with. They don't pay you for being hard working or having more experience.

It's not about your colleague being a better negotiator, it's about your colleague having bigger balls - you know that phrase "you don't ask you don't get", yeah it applies. During pay reviews it's highly possible that they have been more aggressive and as a result have secured a better deal, that's more to do with gall than negotiation.

I am also a developer in the same situation as you. In my experience it makes no difference what other people earn. Maybe they were offered another job and paid more to stay?

If you are not happy then leave.

I've seen the same thing at virtually every company I've worked for. People who everybody else wonders "Why are they still here?". The simple reality is that for some reason they click with the people who matter and there's nowt you can do about it.
Assuming you were content with your salary before discovering this 'anomoly', put it behind you and get on with your life.
