Car Purchase from hell
I purchased a car from a second hand car dealer, at the sum of 13k through finance company.
I went for a test drive of 15 miles, and absolutely loved the car.
Went back arranged all the finance, and sorted the insurance and picked it up on the following monday.
On the friday i started to notice a noise, which i hadnt noticed before, i had just been driving to work 2 miles each way each day until then.
I informed the dealer of the issue, and he informed me to take it to a garage and find out what the fault is. so on the following week i took the car to the garage and they investigated and they found a fault with the clutch bearing. i called the dealer back up and explained what the outcome was, and he said he would pay out of his own pocket to get the bearing replaced, and if i wanted too, i could pay the extra and get the whole clutch replaced, which i agreed too. So basically halves on the cost.
I have taken the car to the garage today, to be repaired, and they have found, when taking the whole car apart, the flywheel is also !!!!!!ed. which will cost a further 600 pound.
So i have called the dealer back up tonight, and he is say oh it was fine when you test drove it lalalala. and that i should call up the warranty company to get it repaired(But this will take days).
Is the dealer liable for the cost to get the flywheel fixed also, considering the value of the car and how long iv had it

He woud be totally liable for a flywheel failure on the car, as it would be deemed to have been present at the time of sale.
The warranty company wont pay out so soon after purchase i would have thought.
Is a flywheel on its own really £600? Surely thats the whole kit?0 -
What kind of car / engine is it?
Is it a dual mass flywheel? A lot of companies will advise the flywheel is worn / knackered just to gain extra revenue even though it's fine.
You have to use a special tool to measure the wear on a DMF which most garages don't have.
£600 sounds like a full clutch kit including thrust release bearing, pressure plate, friction plate and flywheel. All your base are belong to us.0 -

Its a volkswagen golf gti 2.0 mk6.
He just said it would be a potentially £600 extra, he would get the exact price in the morning, just for the part, no extra labour. they already have the clutch.
The garage arnt rip of merchants, they have done plenty of work for me before, so im happy there not over-charging.
Im just more annoyed its happened so soon after purchasing the car. In regards to getting the dealer, if he is refusing responsibility for the flywheel, is it worth going ahead with the work, and going through legal means, or potentially through the finance company to get it sorted0 -
It sounds to me that the garage did a partial diagnosis, and it is now causing you grief.
Did they have the gearbox out of the car when they said it was the thrust bearing?
Either way, ask the garage for a written report on what is actually knackered and go with that to the dealer. Any decent dealer will take that information and work on coming to an acceptable solution for you.0 -
worn or broken?
big difference to warantee companieslbm 11/06/12 dept total 11499.470 -
Unless something has gone bang or snap, warranty co won't care. And then if its something that has worn and broken from use, it won't be covered.
Is the finance on the car or just a generic loan?0 -
When my clutch and dual mass flywheel needed replacing the first garage said "Trade it in now, they won't notice". A few weeks later I was having a tyre fitted when I heard this conversation "I've had a look at your car- it's going to be expensive-clutch and dual-mass flywheel. You're a dealer aren't you. Pause. So you'll just pass on the problem to your next customer OK See you in a few minutes."
I think you need to expect a good proportion of second hand cars to have faults. I wouldn't trade in a car in that condition so I got it repaired. 6 years and 66000 miles later the car's still going well.0
