iphone contract to pay as you go questions

Apologies if any of these are really obvious/ daft. This is my first ever phone contract and iPhone and I'd prefer to be as informed as possible before contacting the phone company or getting pushed into something I don't need.

I have an iPhone on a contract that's coming to an end. The phone works perfectly fine so I have no need to upgrade. I don't use anywhere near the amount I'm paying so am thinking of switching to pay as you go. I mostly use my phone for internet etc at home, checking emails and social media when I'm out, texting (imessages) and the odd phone call so don't need unlimited minutes. I'm thinking about staying with the same provider (coverage issues), but simply don't want to pay for things I'm not using.

Does my contract end automatically on the end date or do I have to cancel it?

Do I get to keep the phone when I end my contract or do I return it like a library book?

Can an iPhone be changed to pay as you go?

Do I need a pac code if I want to stay with the same network? (if so what is it?)

On pay as you go does using my wifi at home count towards a data allowance?

Can I still use i message for free?

Can I still use apps when I'm out?

Do I lose any phone functions being pay as you go?

Can I get iPhone insurance that covers just against dropping/ breakage on pay as you go or does insurance only exist for contract phones?

Does my contract end automatically on the end date
No, only the minimum term ends.
or do I have to cancel it?
Yes - 1-month's notice is required.
Do I get to keep the phone when I end my contract or do I return it like a library book?
Yes - if you switch to PAYG or sim-only contract with the same network.
If you want to port it to another network, you get a PAC instead of giving a notice and then give the PAC to the new network. PAC lasts for 30 days, and you have to use it. Otherwise the original contract goes on.
Can an iPhone be changed to pay as you go?
Yes, but it's worth to get it unlocked by your current provider if you want to be able to use it on any network.
Do I need a pac code if I want to stay with the same network? (if so what is it?)
    No
On pay as you go does using my wifi at home count towards a data allowance?
I counts on neither PAYG nor a contract.
Can I still use i message for free?
On wifi only. Mobile data is never free.
Can I still use apps when I'm out?
    Sure.
Do I lose any phone functions being pay as you go?
    No.
Can I get iPhone insurance that covers just against dropping/ breakage on pay as you goor does insurance only exist for contract phones?
A phone can be insured regardless, but insurers can have different requirements for it's age, proofs of purchase etc.

I meant the number, not the phone.
The phone was yours to keep from the start.
