Its not just fuel, the boys in blue pull her over and they are going to want to see some business insurance, not the cheap stuff that covers you for use in your own business, normal insurance only covers social domestic and commuting to a usual place of work, not using your car at the bequest of an employer.
    .
Then the car breaks and she has no money to buy a new one as she puts the wages in the tank every day.
I do Contracts, all day every day.

Although when I changed job to one that meant lots of driving between places, it hardly affected the insurance premium. Business cover isn't that expensive if you're not driving clients around.
If it's the type of work she wants, there are some companies who pay mileage although not necessarily at the full amount - maybe she could look around a bit more for similar job, better employer?

To get your question into perspective, how many hours a week (on top of the 16 she's paid for) would she be driving? How many visits a day, how many miles?

Found this to help with the sums. (Although I think the rate is now 45p a mile.)

"You can claim 20% tax relief for up to 40p a mile for the first 10000 miles, and then 25p per mile for 10000+ miles claimed.
    How it works
    Example:

    8000 miles driven within a tax year = 8000 x 40p will give you £3200 expenses.

You can claim tax relief against £3200, so if you put in a claim on 8000 miles at 40p a mile you will receive 20% x £3200 = £640 (if your claim is successful)

Please note you will not be receiving 40p or 25p a mile – you are claiming tax relief on this which is 20% of that amount.

If your employer has paid you any mileage then this amount must be stated on your application as it will be deducted from it.

Claiming a tax rebate is your responsibility and not that of your employer."
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

If you are not a commercial traveler your vehicle insurance for business use will not be much more, mine was £20 a year and I travelled about 25,000 miles a year. If your friend is not paying any tax then the mileage tax relief is worthless as it is used to reduce your tax, you do not get any extra money.

But at 16 hours a week she won't have any tax to pay on which to claim relief, surely?

Tell the employer that if they're not paying mileage she'll cycle between jobs..

Actually HMRC make an allowance for that too, I believe..
  • Is the lady also being asked to pay her own DBS?
That concludes if it's a scummy company, through and through, if so I'd run

I think if there is any doubt, you need to be re-asking the company concerned and direct before going any further
