Lg TV

Options
My year old LG Smart TV is not so smart today as it is beyond economical repair according to the LG nominated repair service.

LG will contact me with "options" I presume some sort of like for like 2nd hand TV?
Anyone had any experience of this?

You have certain rights under the Sales of Goods Act. Familiarise yourself with them so you understand what you should expect and can argue your case if it's not offered.

If it went to court you could reasonably expect to be granted 4/5 of the TV's value since you've had a year's usage. (This presupposes that a TV *ought* to give 5 years' service - a reasonable expectation.) So you might, for example, request a new TV of the same price and offer the "usage" balance (1/5) in payment. Or you might simply accept a year-old "refurbished" TV with no payment.

I vaguely remember an EU ruling about electrical goods being guaranteed for 2 years? Or did I imagine it??

The part of SOGA you're after here is that the product should last a 'reasonable' amount of time. For a TV, you should 'reasonably' expect a £99 20" Technica TV out of Tesco to not last as long as a £900 50" LG.
How much did your LG cost and how much use did you get out of it?
It'll still be under warranty at a year anyway so you should be offered a new, or maybe a refurb. As long as it's at least the same model, I'd take it!
Also, SOGA applies to your RETAILER, not manufacturer.
So depending on what LG offer, you might end up chasing the retailer.

The EU directive is not a guarantee, it simply allows you 2 years to report a faulty product, and doesn't indicate how long it should last.

in the England (and i think wales) you have 6 years, which is more than the eu directive.

also, beyond their warranty, LG dont have to offer anything, instead its upto the retailer

The TV cost approx £300 from Amazon April 2014. When I contacted Amazon they referred me to LG first, then if no joy from LG to come back to Amazon.

So you're waiting to see what LG offer before you goto Amazon. As I say, a refurb at least as good as your TV (make sure it has all the inputs you need for example) would be acceptable.

I contacted LG yesterday for update. They said my file was received today and I should hear something next week. I explained I had no TV, about 10mins later I got a text from cic@lguk asking for proof of purchase.
I sent by email and they acknowledged receipt. In the meantime Ihave purchased another TV so whatever happens I hope to sell the replacement to go towards the newTv which has a 5 year warranty from John Lewis which may or may not be helpful. Time will tell.
This lg tv which is not worth fixing is actually a replacement as the original one packed up after a couple of months and Amazon replaced

    Update
LG repair delivered the broken TV back to me still broken. Contacted Amazon and they are collecting the TV tomorrow and when they receive it they are issuing a full refund. Really pleased with Amazon for this. So hopefully all sorted.
