The Oxford shark house is in Headington. I used to live near it.

Yes, I work in the hospital nearby.

I'm amazed it's lasted all these years - I wouldn't like to be in the house (or neighbour) on a stormy night...

    I found it pretty unbelievable.

Not all the the subjects were on the same level... but they were all essentially trying to do what they wanted, in order to save money... which IF approved retrospectively, in some cases would also cause them personal financial gain. Its just a waste of public money.

I've dealt with the planning department (properly) and it takes weeks to get answers out of them on the simplest of questions, and now I can see why... as they're probably too busy dealing with the mountains of paperwork generated by this bunch of chancers.

Is the shark house not there any more?? I lived in Oxford for years, and used to drive past it to show friends! I must have missed this episode!

I did see the one with the arrogant guy who buiilt a 5 bed chalet bungalow instead of a 3 bed bungalow, who then built a 'garage' which he turned into a bed sit for his daughter. I cannot believe he got permission in the end! Obviously some councils are softer than others!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Having seen this thread - I just had to watch an episode of this to see what it was about....

I saw the episode with Mr Arrogant who decided to interpret permission for a 3 bedroom bungalow as being permission for a 5 bedroom house.

It was an object lesson in human nature that's for sure. The sheer level of self-justification for bad behaviour that they were all going in for was incredible. I cant believe how they all thought they would get away with it - other than Mr Arrogant (who clearly knew very well he was in the wrong - but had decided to just "bulldoze" his way through everyone else). He did get a bit of come-uppance at least (administered via that bull who attacked him) at least I guess...

He was probably the one who I found the most unbelievable. He took a risk and bought the land with no planning and managed to get permission for a 3bed bungalow (and fair-play to him for achieving that)... but he took that permission and built what he wanted. Then he built a further two buildings without any permission at all.

Cut to his interview and he openly admits he likes a fight with the council... and keeps a blood pressure monitor for going through his paperwork. Then he seems to be looking for some sort of sympathy vote when he was unable to stop the council demolishing one of his garages, after he was hurt while on holiday... which I guess means he was unable to get home to stand in the way of the demolition squad - which he seems to suggest was a bit underhand on the councils part! :rotfl:

    I've been Money Tipped!
I really felt sorry for was the guy in Bristol with his economic house. Seemed like a really nice guy who just made a few bad decisions in life

I have sympathy for some, but that builder who consistently built without planning permission (then had the gall to blame his neighbour) was not one of them!

I can see the councils point of view that if they just allow it to stay up there could be others who do the same - but in the case of the guy from Bristol, he wasn't hurting anyone and the neighbours didn't mind.... Poor guy.

From what I've seen they appear to be a group of people who have created an unpleasant situation and then subsequently like to portray themselves as the victim.

I have no sympathy for any of them I'm afraid.

What struck me was the eco house built out of straw.... the guy who built it couldn't live in it and had to demolish it, but the minute bats were discovered he was not allowed to demolish it!!

He can't live there but bats can!!

He was one I did feel sorry for, he was between a rock and a hard place, being told he would be breaking the law if he demolished (which he was prepared to do) while the bats were there and the council chasing him and the courts fining him, because he didn't!!

Fortunately Mother Nature sorted it out for him! :T
