Motorola G 2nd Gen - Help! Locked Out, Emergency Calls only, Demanding PIN Never Set!

I guess the subject line is self explanatory. I've suddenly been locked out of my Motorola G 2nd Gen, no Sim service, Emergency calls only and it is demanding a passcode I've never set! Looking on the Internet this is a common problem, but can't find the answer! Would appreciate any help - please!

Take out the SIM, wipe the contacts with a cloth (e.g. for cleaning spectacles) and re-insert?

We have 2 of these phones (Moto G 5" 2nd gen) and haven't had any issues. (Apart from DD2 dropping hers and breaking the screen, but that's self-inflicted).

    PIN or passcode?

If you really need help, at least get your facts right.

If it's PIN and the sim card is supposedly locked, check it in another phone.

If it's asking for a PIN it sounds like the SIM card is locked, rather than the phone.

It was demanding a passcode which I 'd never set. I did also get the Sim code but it didn't work. In the end I phoned Motorola and the person who answered couldn't help me unlock it, so she took me through a factory reset. It's now working but I'm hoping it doesn't happen again as I definitely didn't set a passcode!

Someone else with access to the phone playing silly jokes on you?

No, nothing like that. I entered into the phone and tried to set up email (something which I haven't managed to do yet which I usually find very simple). That didn't work and I just left the phone for a while, came back to it and I was locked out. I can only think that when I was trying to do the email, something occurred. But looking on the internet, there are a number of people who seem to have had the same problem ie not set a passcode and being locked out. I did try all my usual combinations and none of them worked.
