Free app (Navmii), and calls work fine. I don't use it for music as I have my Ipod hooked up to the MDI input in my car.
But don't let facts get in the way of a good (unsubstantiated) rant, eh?
FWIW I don't use audio prompts as the visual cues are usually pretty good.0 -

using sat nav app on your phone is clumsy as hell for reasons you have identified and more.

Nope, Google Maps works fine for me. Works alongside my music via BT seamlessly, thanks. And it's always up to date.0 -
Sorry but I have a sat nav (Garmin nuvi) and my question was whether it could be configured to work with my car cd player so that it only cuts in when there is a direction to broadcast. Not really bothered about sat nav apps. on phones0

The answer is no. The only way you will get it to work is by listening to music on your phone instead of the car's CD player and also using a sat nav app on said phone.
If you are interested in the above, Here Drive+ is a sat nav app available free to Windows Phone users. It has full, offline maps available (so you don't need to use your phone's data connection unlike many Android nav apps). Windows phones are available from £30 upwardsThe quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.

Are there any sat navs which will do this?
The place to look is in the car player manual not on the Garmin. If the car has some sort of support for phones, as opposed to just another input then it is a possibility that the car will support what you want, but in reality I think it is highly unlikely and the best you can do is to simply use the internal speaker of the SatNav and not play music too loud.0 -
