Nothing wrong with renting privately. I am sick of hearing of bad landlords  do you ever hear of bad tenants?
I have spent the last 5 days helping my parents empty a flat after their tenant did a bunk. They only found out a month after the tenant did a runner after receiving a letter from the council demanding council tax on the property.
The tenant broke every door in the house, vandalised it completely  the place is a wreck  It was grim, the grime and dirt was disgusting, the blinds were covered in thick grease and it will cost £1000s to fix. I could go on but I will save you the details.
Honestly you wouldn't believe our experience of tenants - you would think we'd made it up.
Just like 'Benefit tenants' on TV but 100x worse because we are actually involved, albeit in a round about way.
These people aren't paying for the house because it's all paid through benefits, they don't take care of it, so why should we be made out to be the 'bad or rogue landlord'
Not disagreeing with you at all. Just saying that people who are giving up a secure tenancy provided by social housing usually want something more secure than a 12 month AST.What are the rules regarding landlords doing inspections?
My eldest has lived in various rentals over the last 8 years and inspections by the landlord are regular events.
In the flat she is in now the landlord lives next door so the flat is immaculate all of the time
Whatever it says in the contract, provided it doesn't amount to harassment and generally 24 hours notice should be given.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Yes you remembered correctly. My country of birth is South Africa
My suggestions for your sister are for her to leave ALL of her jewellery at home. Thieves can't tell whether your jewellery is genuine or plated, so are equally happy to take both off of you. Similarly keep all your cash, cards etc in your front pockets of coats, jeans etc. Under no circumstances should you carry any of your stuff around in a backpack type bag - it will get snatched off of her.
Bear in mind that unemployment is high, and there are no benefits whatsoever in South Africa. So crime is high because it is a way to make money. Your sister and BIL should therefore make sure that they never leave their possessions unattended, and keep all valuables as close as possible to their bodies so that they are difficult to snatch or pick pocket.
Do not hire an expensive car. Car hijacking is common in South Africa, and what may be considered a run of the mill car here will generally be considered a high end vehicle worth hijacking in South Africa. So hire a small common type car. No 4x4s, BMWs or Mercs.
Do not wander around the local area after dark unless you are in a large group.
Aside from that, meat and booze is cheap in South Africa and the sun is likely to be shining, albeit a bit cooler at the moment as it is winter there now. The people are friendly, the beaches are sandy. So have a lovely time.
Things to do in Durban would be to visit the shark museum and abattoir - fascinating to see the teeth, humungous jaws etc. Also a visit to the sugar cane plantations are worthwhile. South Africans holiday in Durban because it has the most fantastic beaches.
And a Durban curry - you cannot go to Durban without trying a Durban curry - yum yum yum!
Thank you so much for this. Sister has been panicking a bit. Loves the idea of shark museum and sugar plantation.
They will not be hiring a car. Bil is running the comrades marathon (56 miles) which ends up in Pietermaritzburg. Sis was not happy about finding her way to finish line so change of plans they will book a second Durban hotel where she will stay until bil returns the following day.
She is feeling a bit better now and thank god you reminded her about cameras. She will take dads little old digital one and upload to cloud each night incase it goes missing.
Loves the idea of a Durban curry.
Thank you so much.
Happy birthday Durham and of course belated happy birthday to TS.
Need to read back in final dress choice. Eurovision is on here so I will be retiring to my room soon.
Nice here as nephew is back from France and niece is home from uni. After a hard days toil we have just enjoyed a half price dominos.
Off to catch up.
