Food companies and supermarkets err on the side of caution for fear of being sued and other things food. That is OK one side of midnight won't suddenly go off. the other side most food will be OK for a. couple of days after if kept chilled

I used to work in a food factory lab adjoining the one where they tested how long food would last for. IIRC the use by dates were a day or two before the number of bacteria reached significant numbers.

On the pack sizes and 'inflation' (or deflation?), I've asked the question - but don't hold your breath: last time (a number of years ago) I had cause to enquire of the Statistics Office, it took well over 6 months before they gave me a reply. Hopefully it will be more straightforward and I can get a sooner reply this time. I suspect they're inundated with enquiries at this time though:( and I doubt they have many staff to deal with them.

I think some one said the other day to chuck some items in your basket to take the spend higher add vouchers then remove said item... Say for example a bottle of champagne :)

Have worked in food factories and kitchens and I don't rely on use by dates at all.
