    There is no way that I know of that a sender of an email can tell if you've read it or not.

    What they can do is put an image in the email, something like a tiny white pixel, the URL will be specific to your email - they will see that image has been downloaded from their server by your email reader.

    There is (can be) all sort of tracking in emails - whether opened, whether you clicked through etc. It can give false results (for example, if you use Outlook and preview) but the technology exists. At a clumsy level you can add Delivered and Read Receipts in Outlook (for Read the person has to confirm).

    They are a bunch of Cowboys Munqui and I seriously doubt they are that sophisticated
