Cot mattresses

As a grandmother to (almost) five children, I often have them at my house during the day or even overnight.

I am currently looking to buy a cot bed so that they can sleep when they need to.

I have a cot bed mattress with a removable cover and thought maybe I could use this to save a bit of money. It was my almost four year old grandson's.

Now I am hearing/reading that I should not use an already used mattress with babies. So, I thought I would buy a new one but, now I am thinking, the cot will be used by my now three month old baby but also, come December, there will be a new baby, his cousin. Does this mean that I need to buy two mattresses?

Once such thoughts (which would never have occurred when my own children were young) are in the mind, I know I need to do the safest thing.

Any thoughts?

I have tried to find scientific backing to verify that apparently each baby needs a new mattress and I can't find anything to back it up. I think it's yet another wet con invented by companies to make make more money out of parents insecurities.

I'd be interested if anyone has scientific evidence to the contrary.
I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."
Mortgage is my only debt - Original mortgage - January 2008 = £88,400, March 2014 = £47,000 Chipping away slowly! Now saving to move.

If it was me, I would strip it, air it thoroughly and wash all covers. Unless it was really stained, I can't see why you would need a brand new one.
