I'd leave the tippex alone and get straight back to the dealer for an explantion.

They'll probably stamp a new book up for you. The service history only indicates that someone probably took it for a service NOT that anything was actually done.

An update and thank you all for the advice so far.

I spoke to the dealer, and he says (after 24 hours of 'finding' out) that they had a new girl that started that week, and a Ford KA sold the same week we bought ours. She mixed up the books and he has spoken to the owner of the Ford KA - they are posting it back to him and we will swap.

Honestly, this sounds so suspicious! Why would you tippex out a registration and write one over the top on the service book. They aren't some tin pot car dealership either, they have 2 branches.

So, I have bought a car that may not have as good as service history - or whatever I've seen isn't true for my vehicle. I know that it doesn't mean they have actually done it, but we don't plan to have it forever and will want to sell. Im sure they could just buy a new service book and fake that one too?!

So question is - where do I stand with this legally?

So just to confirm the dealer now admit that they forged the service book because they could not locate servicing records for the car. Sorry to cause worry but what else have they hidden I.e engine faults, braking issues. The car could well be ok but I would seriously question it and would be asking for a part refund to reflect the value with no service history.

Dealer could find themselves in serious hot water over this. Trading standards would most likely be interested. Are you prepared to name and shame.

I would contact trading standards in this situation.

Did you HPI check? That would show any previous registrations.

Our car has had 3 different registrations, all show on the HPI report. It had a registration from new, it then had a private registration, then when the registration was taken off the DVLA didn't give it back the original registration.
The service book has the original registration, but is verified with the VIN number matching the service book and the registration on the service book is on the previous registrations on the HPI check.

Seems odd to do something like this, swapping the service book with one from another car? That a lot of trouble to go to...........

Usually they just stamp in all the blanks on the correct service book, alternating two different ink colours (to make it look legit).

    An update!

I still haven't received the service book. It was apparently sent 22nd May and is still not here, so appears to be lost somewhere. Honestly, I couldn't make this UP!

I checked which address they sent it to, and it was my address, the road name was misspelt a bit - but everything else was correct, so perhaps it genuinely is lost or they really are just dodgy as anything?!

I also spoke to Trading Standards who want to know if the advert stated there was a full service history - and of course, it's not online any more, so I can't check now.

I don't really know where to go from here. Feel so cross. I paid with my debit card, does this protect me in any way... I don't know how/what from - clutching at straws a bit here!

I wouldn't be phoning the dealer and would be in the office until it was resolved to my liking as this is not quite right, Talking about admin staff using tippex then Nye on 2 weeks for it to be posted, Go in and say have 1 hour to sort or else I am reporting it to trading standards, The local papers and taking legal action to boot.
