Msdress.co.uk poor quality prom dresses from China

Hi everyone,

this is the first time I have created a new thread but I wanted to warn others of my experience, and ask for some help.

I bought a Prom dress for my daughter on an on line website called Msdress.co.uk. The photos of the dress were beautiful and the websites terms and conditions offered a satisfaction guarantee with 14 day money back options so I was tempted to purchase at such a great price (£100).

The dress turned up promptly but bore no resemblance to the photos on the website, other than the colour and general style. I immediately contacted the company who said 'They were confident the dresses were worth the money and didn't offer refunds'. I only found out at this point that I was trading with a Chinese company so the Consumer rights I was quoting them (14 day right to return etc.) meant nothing and despite numerous threatening emails from me they refused to discuss a return.

I have done all the normal things and am pleased to say my Credit card company has been brilliant and reversed the transaction. I have also reported the website to Trading Standards and I believe there is something they can do as the website does not have their company address on and I have provided evidence that the company are breaching their own terms and conditions.

I am making this post to warn others not to use this company and to ask anyone out there what is the best way to communicate this to a wider audience so that they can avoid the heartbreak this has caused my daughter and the stress this has caused me.

Any advice would be really appreciated

Trading standards have no jurisdiction outside of the UK - nor do UK/EU regulations have any effect in China. So unless chinese law required them to display an address, they're not breaking any laws unfortunately.

Not much help atm I know but in future when buying (especially from an unknown company) always check for warning signs (such as no address or basic rate - 01, 02 or 03 - telephone number, not registered with companies house and T&C's giving no reference to the governing law or stating its governed by a law not belonging to the UK).

Unfortunately I think the most you can do under the circumstances is write a bad review.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Looking at the website, it would ring alarm bells just because they have no address or phone number to contact. Just email.

It is generally good practice to stay away from any company who cannot provide basic details like this, or as you did, pay with the safety of a credit card!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I'm glad that the CC company has refunded your money, but for the future I have two words for you to bear in mind: due diligence.
  • Thanks for the posts. Any advice of the best place to post a review to circulate more widely this problem?

There's a few I know of if you google review sites eg trust pilot, reevoo, reviewcentre are a couple. The consumer needs to do basic research into the company before buying.

Sending threatening emails isn't a way to solve anything, and could land you in hot water with the plod.

A very quick look at reviews shows a reviewer calling themselves hogan t and hogan Timothy giving two completely different review of product bought from them ( different description, different country of origin). You may want to highlight that in your reviews too.
There are so few reviews it doesn't suggest an established company.

I have had real bad experiences of buying clothes from Chinese websites. The quality is absolutely absymal and most certainly worse than something you would buy from a 99p store. Expect the stitching to start falling apart as soon you start wearing.
But the biggest problem is that they can never get sizes right. Everything I bought was way to small. I bought shirts and vests described as medium/large size - they would not even fit a child.
My free advice - never buy clothing or shoes from Chinese websites. False economy!
  • I've had exactly the same experience as the last person - dress is a complete load of rubbish - terrible fabric, bust is completely flattened, sequins dropping off already and worst of all it has been cut so badly that you can't even get the dress on - even my youngest daughter who is a size smaller than me couldn't even get it past her thighs! The company refuse to take it back and just keep saying to "take it to a local tailor"! Their website is very misleading and leads you to believe they will take returns - THEY DON'T!!!!!!!!!! AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!
