Hi, just come across this post and looking for advice to try and get my money back.
    I purchased a prom dress through dressdo.co.uk(stupidly).
I had purchased one off ebay but a local seastress ruined it and it was from china and beautifully made. 2 years ago i bought one for my other daughters prom again no problem at all and they were both through ebay.
Trouble started as running out of time, live in the back of beyond and my daughter couldn't find one she liked that was local, in the uk or would be guaranteed delivery on time for the prom on ebay.
Come across this dress and as so frazzled stupidly agreed to order it and it had some good reviews from what i could find.

I did try and cancel the dress as there was a lack of communication when i asked for photos and information plus due to a family crisis she wasn't going to go.
Anyway they eventually sent photos and the dress looked fine on them.
It arrived now bearing in mind its a ball gown you don't expect the 2 layers of net to only come to the knees! The dress was cut badly at the bottom and most of the sequins etc are falling off.

I contacted them several times and sent a photo of the strange netting and explained the dress looked odd as it doesn't hang right and you can see the outline of the net. Also although i never sent photos i explained about the sequins etc. After no reply i sent an email asking to return it as according to their terms and conditions i could if it was poor quality which it is.
Finally got a reply today saying the dress was thoroughly checked before sending, they couldn't see the sequins hanging off and it is fine to have a ball gown with the net finishing at your knees. They are sorry it doesn't meet my expectations and i will receive a discount on my next order but i can't return as they have several people that have spent a couple of days on each process of the dress. Could i keep the dress it is still wearable and they are sorry for my troubles.
Do i send another with photos of the sequins etc and ask again to return or am i wasting my breath(know the answer to that one).
i understand that it has cost them but it wasn't a few pounds it was £160 and i still have a customs bill to come as well.

Will it be worth trying to get my money back through my credit card?
Luckily i have managed to get hold of a dress that was a sample dress at a prom shop and it was half price(no money left for a full price one) and she is able to go to the prom.
Wouldn't bother if it wasn't a lot of money but it was!

    Any advice appreciated
  • I have done the same with website fashionable laughter they offer same thing free delivery and returns but no return label so I paid 12.00 to return recorded delivery but nobody would sign for it
they keep e mailing saying send us pictures which I have and the dress but getting nowhere it should have been a coast dress nothing like it.I to didn't know it was a Chinese company until paid for I know of 3 other people in my office done the same I made mistake not paying on credit card so am now out pocket

The biggest warning sign on that site is the absence of an ssl certificate, the green bar/padlock depending on your browser and https urls. If it isn't there when you are being asked for your address and card details, abandon the site. Some sites will only use these when you checkout, some on all pages. Some certificates will fully identify the business too, e.g https://secure.tesco.com

Not much help atm I know but in future when buying (especially from an unknown company) always check for warning signs (such as no address or basic rate - 01, 02 or 03 - telephone number, not registered with companies house and T&C's giving no reference to the governing law or stating its governed by a law not belonging to the UK).

Why is this a warning sign? 03 numbers were brought in for the benefit of consumers, as 08 numbers were either expensive for all users (as in 0870) or expensive for mobile users (0800, 0845). Things have changed recently with 0800 being free from mobiles from July, but companies using standard rate numbers should be encouraged, not suggested as a sign they are dodgy.

I've found this site called Amazon.co.uk, they have no phone number visible, I can't find a company name or number for the UK, they are registered in Luxembourg and "These conditions are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and the application of the United Nations Convention of Contracts for the International Sale of Goods is expressly excluded.". Very suspect ;)

Do you mean standard rate as in 01, 02, 03 numbers? I didn't say anything about being dodgy. I was referring to possible warning signs that you're not buying from a UK company and one of those signs is not having a 01, 02 or 03 phone number for the customer to contact them on.

Yep amazon are not a UK company - thats pretty much common knowledge to members on this board.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Just playing catch up... What did you expect from Microsoft? ;-)

Seriously though, I've had some great quality and very contemporary shirts from China but the sizing is a HUGE problem. I'm a UK large, but never anything short of XXL or 3XL in 'Asian sizing'. Problem is it's so hard to check properly in advance... Oh well, just to say that there (naturally) are some excellent designers and seamsters working from there, just because it's China doesn't automatically mean bad :)
