I have several of these in my freezer with use by dates over one month ago. Is there any indication of when the problem started?0

How do you expect every single item to be checked as it leaves the factory ?
Do you want the whole factory to be checked and the machines stripped down every night to check no metal or other bits have snapped off during the day ?
A quality suppliers will be checking certain parts of a machine at the beginning and end of shifts (may be more frequently). They will be checking slicer blades etc.
Its easier to check often, than have a massive recall like this that will harm your business reputation.
This is standard practice.0 -

You have no idea where in the process the piece of metal is from. Isnt possible to strip down a machine and check the hidden parts every day0 -

As none of us know the background as we do not work for the ready meal factory or in JS technical team we do not know exactly.
It is possible to strip down high risk parts of the machine. Like slicing blades as they will need cleaning anyway.
If its a bolt that's fallen off a big machine. This will get picked up by a working metal detector. So you would not need to strip the whole of the machine.
Slicing blades = can get chipped. Hence you need to check at end of shift. If there is a chip in the blade. You just do not let your products on to the lorry that have been made since its last check.0 -

Whats more bad PR for a supermarket?
1. Recalling about 30 odd lines
2. Keeping these 30 odd lines on the shelves and a number of customers become seriously ill or die (not necessarily from this example of metal) from eating products from this section?
Number 2. Plus in the recall, Sainsburys are only refunding the cost of the products. If the latter happened, they will be compensating in the thousands and perhaps fined in the thousands. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I would hazard a guess the supplier further down the line will be refunding the difference.
Though to be fair to JS (and other supermarkets) its very likely to be there fault.
In a way its half decent PR for JS (well as good as PR for when things go wrong). As if there is a issue that effects there customers health. They will make the right decisions in looking out for you.0 -

In the programme I saw one manufacturer had a metal detector, but this does not mean EVERY manufacturer has one.
I haven't seen any proof this manufacturer actually had one. I suspect they didn't, as it would be plain silly to buy a metal detecting system, and not use it.
Neither, it was a society that has grown up thinking someone else has to take responsibility for what they put in their mouth. So at the slightest chance there may be a foriegn object they have to recal the entire batch, because todays society can't cope with putting a piece of metal in their mouth then taking it out again.
Sorry my information was from being in the food industry.
Not from an armchair watching a BBC TV program. The more I live, the more I learn.
The more I learn, the more I grow.
The more I grow, the more I see.
The more I see, the more I know.
The more I know, the more I see,
How little I know.!!0
