What car is best; a ford focus or a ford mondeo ?

Hi all,

I am considering buying a ford mondeo or ford focus. Looking at cars less than 12 months old. Currently have a 2005 mondeo and really impressed with it.

Can anyone please advise me as not sure what to do. I do less than 8000 miles p.a.

Will consider other cars models/makes but I need help as not sure what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Which is best will depend on your needs and which engine you choose.

I choose cars that are 5 years old and the Mondeo is generally cheaper to buy than a Focus but similar running costs.

In your case the Focus will probably be cheaper and lose less.

focus and mondeo will be very similar as they will have lots of similar parts.

it depends entirely on what platform your prefer. the mondeo will have a bit more legroom at the back than the focus. While mondeo has a slightly longer boot, the hatchback may be the more useful boot as it is taller and the rear seats can be folded down to pack quite big items.

On my golf I can put very large items into the boot with the seats folded down. Where as on a saloon it's just useful for shopping backs and few small trollys.

    Mondeo is bigger than Focus.
If you need a car that you can more easily fit into smaller parking spaces, and don't need the interior space, then the Focus would be better.
If you need a car that you're going to regularly be filling people and stuff, then the Mondeo would be better.

If you're somewhere between the two, then whichever you prefer. Or, perhaps, something else entirely. There's a lot of cars for sale without Ford badges.

your question has been answered well above but here is my two pennies worth

I am on my third mondeo so you can see where my preference is going to be, i like the size of the mondeo and it is a very capable car that can be had secondhand for reasonable money, it is much maligned as being a reps car but because of this target market it is a fairly comfortable cruiser happy sitting on the motorway for hours on end

as above if you want something that is a bit smaller and easier to navigate the town centres and the tight turns in the multi storey car parks or the ever shrinking supermarket car parking spaces then go for the Focus

for your milage i would look at the 2.0L Zetec petrol as your miles are a bit low for a modern diesel with the potential DPF and the EGR problems, so stick with the petrol

I think the 1.6L eco engines are a bit slow for me as i do a lot of rural driving and need a bit of go to overtake on the A roads, but if it was all around town and on the motorways then i may consider the smaller more economical engined variant

but it is all down to what you want and need and both cars are not a million miles a part, and both very good cars despite what some will say but they still think fords are the same as they were in the Dagenham day

I would go for a petrol Focus, probably the 1.0 Ecoboost.

The current Focus is spacious and will hold its value better than a Mondeo.

The Mondeo is also hard to find in petrol and doing 8k a year would make me a bit concerned to have a modern diesel with DPFs and EGRs to clogg up and cause mayhem

what is that 1.0l ecoboost engine like for power

I am still old school and still think 1.0l engines are for the likes of micras, aygos and other shopping/town cars and 1.0l is to underpowered to run with the big boys

I know things have moved on with engine development but i would still consider a 1.0l motor to small in a car like the focus

    125ps (123bhp), 200Nm (150lbft)...

There may well be criticisms of these modern high-tech small-capacity forced-induction lumps, but you can't say they're underpowered.

Thanks for this. For info, I own a 2.0 2005 Zetec car at the moment and, as I said before, it is an excellent car and very reliable (touch wood).

Thanks everyone else for your advice but still unsure to get another Mondeo or try a focus.

I had a 2003 2.0l Zetec from new and that was declared total loss in 2007 after quite a heavy accident, that was replaced with a 2005 1.8L zetec which i still have

and of the two cars i reckon the 2.0l was the better engine and the MPG was very similar between the two, if you are used to the MPG from a 2.0L Zetec then that may be the engine to stick with

if you do want a few more MPG then maybe test drive a Mondeo with a 1.6L ecoboost engine and see what you think of it
