    Depends a lot on quantity, but as with everything, shop around and ask.

    * local ironmongers/village store
    * local garage
    * coal merchants (how did one find these before the internet)

    If you want to get the lowest price, try t'internet. You will need to buy a large quantity but I order fuel that way. The quality is excellent and the price, even taking into account delivery, is far better than anything I can get locally.

    Failing that, as has been suggested, try your local coal merchants - and buy in summer, when the prices are lower.

    Use a coal merchant. Far cheaper than buying those silly little bags from garages or ironmongery. Also the coal tends to have a better burn time. That bagged stuff burns swiftly. I had half a ton delivered today for 150 quid. That will see us to the end of May,no burning 'til September (usually) then to November when we get the Winter load. Normally that is 3/4 (ish)of a ton. We supplement this with wood (which I get for nothing) so our primary heating is about 350 quid a year.
