  • Makes me sad to see so much negativity about this. Do you really care about social housing that much or is it just the fact that someone might get something that you aren't/weren't in a situation to get yourself? Would you turn it down if you were given the opportunity? I don't think so.

All RtB and RtA do is take away secure, affordable housing from people who do really need it. And I would say that yes, a lot of people on this forum do care about the state of housing in this country, social included in that. If you read through lots of the posts throughout this forum you will find a lot of support for social housing and making sure that the vulnerable get to keep their secure, safe tenancies.

What you won't find is support for people buying property on the cheap with taxpayer-funded discounts, depriving others who actually need the home, only to then sell it on at a huge profit 5 years late.

The truth is, we need more social housing in this country for people who honestly do need it (and not for people like Bob Crow who earn hundreds of thousands of pounds) and hence selling off what stock we do have at huge discounts is not going to benefit society in the long run.

    There's negativity for many reasons.

Sure some might feel it isnt fair to work for 20 years at 40+ hrs per week and still not be on the housing ladder

Others might feel that some people are 'lazy' and dont want to work, so why does the state then offer them a cheap housing purchase opportunity.

But the vast majority think that the country as a whole cannot afford to keep getting rid of social housing, which is in short supply, with no re-investment as it's used to plug gaps in the system. This perpetuates the cycle of securing social housing to take advantage of the cheaper option, which in turn damages the economy more.

The fact is the population is growing, the social housing market is shrinking and your grandchildren will not have the option of government help because there simply wont be any housing available.

We should be constructing thousands of homes every year, purely to support the social housing needs. - It is only through such investment that the current system coul dbe somewhat sustained.

Selling off council or HA properties affects everyone living in this country.

You ask if I would turn down the opportunity if presented with it. Perhaps, perhaps not. But ask a family needing assistance on a waiting list if they want less opportunity for a secure roof over their heads. Or a private renter if they think it's fair that they aren't given the same buying opportunity as a social renter.

It makes me sad that people like you presume the 'negativity' towards the sell off of social housing is rooted in jealousy. Is it really so hard to believe that people actually care about this for reasons other than their own self interest?

I am also very interested in this, one of the reasons I voted conservative

In the Tory manifesto: Right to buy social housing at a discount.
Not in Tory manifesto: Abolishing student maintenance grants.

Which one has been actioned already?
    What does that tell you?

    Hi All,

With the slim majority to the conservatives today, does anyone want to take a gander at the timeframe for allowing housing association tenants to buy their own home to come into fruition?

I know this is the sort of question like 'how long is a piece or string?' but just curious how, in reality complicated this change is - i.e. will it take months or years to sort out.

    Cheers,

Very frustrated we have not heard a thing about this. I understand it make take months, probably a year or two, but a timescale would be nice. Lots of people asking the same type of questions on the Right To Buy Facebook page
  • I think you'll find that the Government has more important issues to deal with.

The Tories suckered people like you into voting for them by taking advantage of their greed but it's highly unlikely to ever happen so I wouldn't hold your breath while you're waiting.
