Boxes for moving house

Any ideas where I can get reasonably priced cardboard boxes for moving house? I've looked at some on Ebay but they don't seem that big. The Yellow Box storage company down the road stocks them but charges a fortune for them!

I know supermarkets all have strange policies now and don't give away any boxes as they have to be recycled etc... (not that many products now come in decent sized cardboard boxes). As I've said, I don't mind paying for them - I just don't know where to get them from!

Any ideas appreciated as I need to start packing in the next few days. Thanks!:o

Have you tried your local freecycle group? I found some on there and then when I'd finished with them I freecycled them again......... worth thinking about. Also, if you've booked a removal company they should have some either cheap or included in the removal price. HTH

Hi, thanks - I might try Freecycle - although I posted something before andf it didn't seem like their was much of a Freecycle thing around here. But yes, I will definitely try it, thanks!

Haven't booked a removal company - we're moving ourselves to save money - and we don't really have that many large items - its things like kitchen stuff and books that I really want the boxes for.

Local small shops often have boxes and as they have to pay to be rid of them are happy to give them away.

I had a look at argos when we moved, but their 3bed sets (we moved from 3 bed) was NOWHERE near big enough (for us anyway).. In the end I made regular trips to my local somerfield and got lots of banana boxes - they are fairly big, and strong.. I probably had around 40 banana boxes (along with lots of other boxes we got from friends, work, etc).. Make sure you have enough, thats for sure.
  • Are you near a hospital? I'm an NHS employee and I always use 'work" boxes. You could enquire at their stores entrance or where they have the big wheelies for refuse? Worth a try, great range of size and strength of card
  • We got a medium pack (30 boxes, varying sizes) from A1 Moving Boxes for £46.99. Doesn't sound that cheap but includes next day delivery.

I've just bought from this company http://www.mad4boxes.co.uk/ . For orders over £35 they offer free next day delivery as well.

The boxes are strong and sturdy, my only complaint is that a small part of my order failed to arrive, but they have apologised and say they will now arrive tomorrow.

I hired plastic crates last time I moved (about 18 months ago). The (refundable) deposit was quite hefty, but the actual hire cost wasn't bad at all, with the added advantage I didn't have to get rid of a load of cardboard boxes after the move.
