Tunnel or ferry?

Done both would personally go for the cheapest. Found both to be excellent and flexible - last time we arrived early for the ferry on the cheapest ticket and they just put us on the earlier boat.
For me living in South cumbria. We usually break our journey on the way down and go for early morning ferry/ train across. Lot less stressful then thinking I've got to get down by x time.
If you do hotel in France we've usually used hotel 30 mins or so from Calais as much cheaper.
My preferred ferry to Portsmouth / Caen or Le harve - easier drive to Portsmouth and drops you that bit further into France. The futures bright the future is Ginger0 -

I like those ferries too and the St Malo crossing as the journey seems part of the holiday especially the excellent food in Brittany's restaurants (no need for packed lunch on there)
Which I choose depends on where we're going in France. So Normandy, Brittany etc. we go from Portsmouth. Epernay (for Christmas Champagne:D) use the tunnel.0 -
Tunnel every time0

I prefer the Tunnel.. to me much better to get over there quick.. do some driving and then have a break in France (rather than on the ferry).0

We travel over about 20 times a year and have tried most things. Tunnel is great for a quick trip when it is working, but it is now 20 years old and we have had delays in about 1/4 of our crossings due to breakdowns. And when it breaks down the delays stack up fast
On P&O the only way to travel is Club Lounge - which doesn't sound very MSE, but for £12 each you get a class of champagne, unlimited tea, coffee & snacks, newpapers plus wifi - which with the price of the onboard Costa etc sound balances out the £12...and there are no coach parties of school kids so you can get some kip too!
On the Spirit of boats there is also a private deck with sunloungers - the only way to cross
But please don't tell anyone else!0 -
Tunnel only now.
Once you've been on a boat in a rough sea and half the people on board are throwing up then you'll never want to do it again. Plus the tunnel costs nothing with my tesco vouchers.Pants0 -

joke post of the month!
I very much doubt more than a handful of people on a crossing have thrown up in rough weather in the last 10 years since the boats all have excellent stabilisers, certainly not 'half'.
Where do you steal Tesco vouchers from? The rest of us pay for them by shopping at Tesco's.The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0
