Agree with Strider, someone started the car without ANY oil in, realised the mistake and filled it up and told the counter staff to cover their backside.I do Contracts, all day every day.0

Based on that logic we should all hang up our car keys and stop driving because 21 people died in Lincolnshire in the first quarter of last year as driving isn't safe! (example figures).
Well I'M never going to drive in Lincolnshire again after reading that.
I live in Belfast so it shouldn't be a problem :-)0 -
Well I value my life, I still entrust it to the airline company, the bus company blah blah blah.
I'd be interested to know how people should get their car repaired if they can't trust anybody! And don't suggest everybody stay with the car at all times because that's not practical.
I ceratinly wouldn't get on an aeroplane, except a proper one where I can see both upeer and lower wings out of the window, and tap the driver on the shoulder if I see a mountain looming up fast
In my experience here is only one person in this world whom I can trust to do a half decent job at anything, and he is typing this postI want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

Except that's not representative of society. Not everybody can do DIY car repairs - and of those that can there are a significant number whom don't do it 'properly' because they don't know of the proper way of doing it.
So it's less of a case of do you trust yourself and more should you trust yourself!
Problem is a lot of people encourage DIY car repairs, plenty of guies to do pads and discs for example, but what these all neglect to tell people are the risks and solutions when it goes wrong. Your average DIYer can replace discs and pads yes, but when they get unlucky that one time and crack of the partially seized carrier bolt, pulling out with it the inner thread then they are !!!!!!ed in that they've probably never even heard of a caliper thread repair kit - let alone know how to properly and safely install one!
Incidently I do agree the mechanic sounds like a moron and has driven it with no oil, but my point is we can't start telling people to show a distrust to a whole industry because of a handful of incidents!
If that was the case then we'd never trust priests again, labeling them all peodos!
I've made my point now anyway, so best we all get back on topic.
Op, you need to contact them and see if they want the opportunity to inspect the car. If they refuse, get something is writing from a competent garage about what's wrong then contact Halfords again.0 -

I never trusted priests to start with. They're living in a dream world based on a dusty old book of fairy tales.0 -
Thanks everyone for responding.
Quick update, Halfords have drained and flushed the system but the issue is still there, they now think the oil slump requires cleaning and is mostly likely the issue.
I have now taken the veh to a Seat Specialist and explained the situation as Halfords are not being honest and I I don't trust them (if they knew the sump or pipes were blocked why not explain that in the first case and report back to me) Seat will check the veh monday and will get back to me, the advisor at Seat was shocked the light has appeared as no previous history of problems.
I'll post a update monday. Again thanks everyone for posts, it's nice to know there are people out there willing to give advice.0 -
i overheard a conversation today between a small garage and his motor factor
He ordered service parts for a toyota yaris and i heard him tell the factor he wanted 10/40 i then heard him say no i want 10/40 so clearly the factor advised a more appropriate oil ,ive checked even though i knew the answer, this car needs 5w-30 the engine was designed for it,why am i posting? well you take your car in and trust the person servicing your car, clearly this doesn't always happen.
I cant give you an answer OP but im pretty certain you dont drop the oil and remove the filter at the same time on this engine or you lose engine oil pressure,if this is the case then maybe garage thrashed the engine to restore oil pressure but in fact killed the bearings due to no oil pressure,do the aa? have a technical dept you could query on what i say or maybe seat direct?0 -
I don't think the AA tech will be able to give that sort of advice when I previously spoke with them, they were unable to confirm what is causing the issue and gave suggestions on what might causing it, but needs to be ramped and checked fully.
If halfords have followed the incorrect process when replacing the oil, will the Seat dealer be able to tell?0 -

once sump dropped they can drop some bearings and look for oil starvation, of course if this engine has had a poor service regime then blockage of the oil pickup pipe is very possible and would not be the fault of the garage doing the service, since my first post i see its gone to a seat specialist, leave it to him you couldn't have gone to a better place0 -
The seat dealer will most likely see mashed up big end bearings with damaged conrods and crankshaft, caused by oil starvation. That's the easy bit. The hard bit is saying why. Halfords will argue the pump failed/gallery blocked/pickup blocked and it was already like that when you took it to them. In reality I think they've run it with no oil by accident and didn't quite catch it in time to stop the bearings being damaged terminally. But proving that might be quite hard0
