I feel a little helpless and hope someone can advise.
We run a community group and need a mobile just to be reached in case of emergency, so all we need is a phone that is just a phone.
I do have old devices, simple enough that would do the job, but as I am looking for pay as you go sims, i am very confused.
All I need is a sim i can insert in the phone, top up with £5 that will last as long as possible as we wouldn't make many calls, but it seems all the PAYG on option are sort of monthly, where I would have to top up monthly?
Can anyone provide some help?

Have a look at 3's 123 ...the credit won't expire, non do unless you buy a bundle. providing you at least use the phone every 6 months or so
Initial top up would be 10 but later top ups £5
It's not just about the money

My OH has just a bog standard phone which we can top up with a fiver.

We have to use it ie, just a text every 90 days so really just 4 times a year to keep it going.

    Orange shop, around £15.00
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Have you looked at Giff Gaff?

I've had credit sat there for months now and can still use the phone.

giffgaff isn't the cheapest, but you can keep the sim active with non-chargeable events if you hardly ever use it.

Three's 321 is as far as I know the cheapest rates, but you may not be able to use it in a 2g phone.

Delight Mobile has the same 3-2-1 rates as Three, but you don't need a modern 3G phone for it because it runs on EE network, 2G and 3G. So you and your colleagues can order a free SIM each, put them in your old handsets, and you can even call and text each other for free without even topping up. Can't get much cheaper than that!

Your old phones may be locked to a provider which will limit which sims will work in them. A giff gaff sim will work in an locked O2 phone. No idea about others.

You have a phone locked to EE? Take eDicky's advice. Initial topup is £5 not £10 but I think they can receive calls from other networks without being topped up so I'm sure eDicky can confirm. More info from #25 here.

Ordered a Standard EE Sim i thought you were trying to find a more cost effective way to run your community groups mobile.

Take eDicky's advice order a Standard Delight Mobile Sim. Uses the EE Network. Will normally work.
    http://www.delightmobile.co.uk/order/free-sim.aspx

If it does Top up with a £5 https://www.delightmobile.co.uk/topup/online.aspx

Benefit from their low rates etc etc. http://www.delightmobile.co.uk/pay-as-you-go/rates/uk-rates.aspx

A voicemail message costs a set 5p to retrieve.

Make sure you make a short call every 180 days otherwise your Delight Mobile SIM will be disconnected from the Network.

OP intends to use the phone for incoming emergency calls only, so the very expensive EE per minute PAYG rates will not be a factor.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
