With a car with this kind of mileage, you should really have done your research and asked if the timing chain had been replaced before you bought it. (not much help now, I know) It's a very common problem on diesel models when they hit the 80k + mileages.

That's partly true I suppose - but other BMW diesels run for ever - twice round the clock is not unusual.

But this problem is unique to the N47 engine.

It was their most popular engine used in over 30 models - thankfully now gone and superseded by the B47.

BMW are doing a partial recall - but they are not calling it a recall.

    It's a 'Product Enhancement' :(

    Good luck.

It is a tricky one, especially as you didn't buy it from a BMW dealer and it doesn't have FBMWSH. The price you paid too will have an influence over any legal remedy. If you got it cheap, it is high in the miles and had satisfactory use for some time, you may not get a small claims in your favour at all.
Unfortunately, not one of BMWs finest engines and well reported across the market.
  • I've seen a few threads recommending Prestige German Engines. They did my BMW X3 at a cost of £4,000 18 months ago. I kept the car for a year and it seemed okay but a week after I sold it, the owner called me to say the engine had seized. He paid a further £4,000 to have the engine replaced by a garage in Newport. It turned out that Prestige had fitted the wrong bolt to a con rod which had failed and caused a catastrophic engine failure. Prestige refused to discuss the matter let alone do anything about it. The new owner was understandably very upset and angry but didn't want to spend more money taking Prestige to court. My advice is to avoid them. I visited the garage and didn't get a good feeling at the time. I should have trusted my senses....
