BMW 3 Series. 318d - Timing Chain - 5 month from dealer

Hi

Recently bought a BMW 3 series 318d from car dealer. Car lost power as I was driving (luckily enough I had enough movement to roll over to side). Car is 58 plate done 110,000 miles... Car was picked up and took to local garage advised the timing chain had snapped and a new engine re-build will be required in the region of £2,500+

Now I've had this car 5 months, did try to go back to person bought off but more less laughed in my face.

I feel like I've been conned.

Is there anything I can do.....

    Hmm.

Its a known issue with that engine but i dont think BMW will replace the engine - unless it has a full BMW SH, i dont think you've much hope there of even getting a contribution.

You should have recourse through the dealer, but it sounds like you are going to have to do it "the hard way". I would prob speak to citizens advice about how best you progress this. Be prepared for a long roller coaster battle to get it sorted but i would have thought you should win it ok, assuming you've looked after the car, had it serviced, etc.

Did the car have any service history when you bought it?

How many miles has it done since you bought it?

Has it been serviced since you bought it?

    SOGA should cover this.

It takes into consideration a lot of things such as age of vehicle, price paid and miles done but if you paid around market value for the car when you got it i think it's reasonable to expect the vehicle to last more than 5 months or 3000 miles.

Hopefully others will chime in advice as well but as suggested above i'd speak to CAB. If you went the small claims court route i'd imagine you'd win your case given the information so far but hopefully others will give their opinion as well.

I agree with this but it will be a sentiment and, if it goes to court, dependant on a sympathetic judge?

Did you pay anything on Credit Card - Consider Section 75 claim against CC Provider

    Hello
Is it a timing chain or timing belt?
I've googled this and found the link below.
Im not sure what the dealer can do here because if when you bought it, there was no noticeable issues that could point to a timing chain issue, then ideally you should have asked before point of sale whether the timing chain has been replaced or not, then go about replacing it yourself if it hadn't?
You could always try as above have mentioned.
its a tough time, my car timing belt (not chain) broke recently.

Bad luck..so much for German precision engineering. Things arent what they used to be. The expert rebuild route seems to be the best choice.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

sounds like you have an N47 engine that has snapped its chain and it is all over the net that this is happening lots of horror stories and it has also been covered on watchdog

what sort of dealer did you buy the car from?

and as above you should have some come back with the selling dealer, but when you said they laughed in your face it kind of worries me that if you want to pursue it then you may have to take it to court

read up on second hand cars and sale of goods act and after you are a bit more aware of what you should get then go back and speak to the selling dealer again

    You need to read this:

I just hope that your car has a complete service record - it doesn't have to have been serviced exclusively at a dealership - but it helps.

    Good luck.
