How do internet connections work in apartment blocks, are they shared or individual?

I'm getting to a stage where I should probably start looking into moving out from my parents, and while this may seem like one of the smaller issues in the host of those that pop up, it is one that I can't seem to find a definitive answer for.

If I was to start renting a flat in a block, is the internet shared between multiple flats, or do you buy it solely for your flat?

My only experience with this sort of thing is uni, where you're all just stuck on one connection, but was wondering if it tends to be the same thing in private renting?

Thanks for any help, and if I'm in the wrong forum please point me towards the right one :)

In general, it comes down a telephone line, you have your own telephone line and therefore your own internet connection.

Or you can get your own mobile broadband: no need for a telephone line.

I can 'see' my neighbours' WiFi networks, but they are protected to stop !!!!!!!!!!s using them.

Always possible to share the neighbour's connection if you agree to split the cost.

Yes, that is certainly an option. However, the neighbours would need to know and trust anyone they shared with - the owner might be liable if their neighbour downloaded illegal adult content for example.
